SWARTHMORE, Pa. (January 2, 2022) – Graduate student
Alec DiPietrantonio netted a season-high 25 points on 8 of 14 shooting, but the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team fell at No. 18 Swarthmore College 89-63 Sunday in a non-conference game played at Tarble Pavilion.
Junior
Matt Crowley matched a career high with 15 points for the Ducks, who dropped their second straight to fall to 4-5.
Vinny DeAngelo led six Garnet in double figures with 15 points as Swarthmore won its sixth straight to improve to 9-1. The nationally-ranked Garnet have lost just once at home since Dec. 1, 2019.
Playing for the first time since Dec. 8 after a series of postponed contests, DiPietrantonio scored 13 points in the first and 12 in the second to cross the 20-point plateau for the ninth time in his career. In addition to his eight field goals, the fifth-year post player added a career-high nine free throws, including each of his first six attempts, to cross the 20-point plateau for the ninth time in his career. The performance moved DiPietrantonio to 962 career points. He also pulled down four rebounds.
After neither team scored on its first two possessions of the game, Ryan Ingram drained a three to put Swarthmore in front. The Garnet's hot shooting from behind the arc ultimately proved to be a key factor in the contest as Swarthmore made 12 of its 23 attempts from long distance (52.2%), with seven different student-athletes sinking at least one. Conversely, the Ducks only shot 2 for 9 from 3-point range, with graduate student
Matt LaCorte and junior
Conor Coffey accounting for the Ducks' three-pointers.
DiPietrantonio had the Ducks first points of 2022 with a short jumper and a Crowley jumper on the Ducks' next possession gave Stevens a 4-3 lead. The duo combined to score the Ducks' first 12 points.
Swarthmore would open a double-digit lead midway through the opening half, with the advantage swelling to 18 on a Matt Mulvey jumper with just under five minutes left in the opening period. Junior
Andrew Abujawdeh scored on a layup to send the Ducks into the intermission with a 13-point deficit.
The Ducks would again pull within 13 on a pair of DiPietrantonio free throws 70 seconds into the second half, but a pair of 8-0 runs by the Garnet would put the game out of reach.

From the Court - Head Coach Bobby Hurley
- "We had some moments of really good basketball today, but we also made too many mistakes that Swarthmore took advantage of. AS we continue to improve, we need to eliminate those mistakes and become more consistent on both ends of the floor for a full 40 minutes."
