Dominant Effort Leads Women’s Basketball Over FDU-Florham

13 Ducks score for the second straight game as Ducks win fifth straight

HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 19, 2022)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team held Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham Campus to single digits in three of the four quarters en route to a 77-26 victory Wednesday in a MAC Freedom matchup at Canavan Arena.

Senior Allie Moss had 11 points and five rebounds and classmate Jess Broad filled the stat sheet with nine points, eight rebounds and four steals for the Ducks, who won their fifth straight to improve to 12-2 on the year and to 7-1 in league play.

Arian Coleman and Kiley Drezek each had seven points for the Devils, who dropped their fifth straight in falling to 1-11 on the year and to 1-7 in MAC Freedom action. The Ducks have won each of the last seven meetings between the programs.

Despite the final score, it was FDU-Florham that got on the board first on a short jumper by Tamyah Jones. The Devils would open a 5-1 lead after a Coleman three before the Ducks took over, going on an 11-0 run to close out the quarter. Senior Vanessa Elliott would put Stevens up for good with a long three off a feed from senior Amber Porrett, after Elliott extended a Stevens possession with an offensive board. Porrett finished with five rebounds, two on the offensive glass, while the go-ahead triple was Elliott's lone basket of the contest.

The Devils' Destiny Knight would open second-quarter scoring with an elbow jumper and Jones drew FDU within three following another short jumper, but the Ducks' defense tightened thereafter, holding the guests to just two points over the final 6:42 as the Ducks' offense broke the game open. Porrett accounted for nine of the Ducks' points during the defining stretch and the 19-2 run was punctuated by a Keeley Coval three and a Moss layup right before the second-quarter buzzer.

The Ducks turned in their most impressive performance in the third quarter, shooting 9 of 19 from the floor, while the Devils finished 2 for 13, as Stevens outscored FDU 25-5 in the period. Nearly half of the Ducks' point in the stanza came in the paint and the team was perfect from the line (6 for 6). Stevens was also able to turn nine FDU turnovers into nine points and scored on three straight possessions in compiling a 20-point margin.

When the final buzzer sounded, 13 different Ducks scored for the second straight game, with eight players scoring at least six.

For the game, the Ducks held FDU-Florham to just 19% (10 for 52) from the field, while controlling the glass by a 63-36 margin. The Ducks' 63 rebounds were the most for the program since pulling down 66 versus Kean on Dec. 3, 2013. Seven Ducks snagged at least five boards.

Pivotal Point
  • Elliott deftly kept possession with Stevens, grabbing a carom off a missed three, saving the loose ball from going out of bounds.
  • Porrett drew a double team near the left block and quickly found the Denville, New Jersey native for an open left-wing three.
  • The second-chance bucket accounted for three of the Ducks' 22 second-chance points and put Stevens in front for good.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens pulled down a season-high 28 offensive rebounds.
  • The Ducks totaled 19 assists on 26 baskets. Broad finished with a game-high four helpers.
  • Broad and sophomore Anika Damera each blocked a shot.
  • Sophomore Ashlynn Barry netted a career-high six points. She joined junior Kaitlyn Rothwell (8) in setting new career highs. First-year Mikayla Rutgers matched a career best with six points.
  • Sophomore Elissa Nsenkyire drew her third career start.
  • The Ducks finished 20 of 26 from the line. The 20 makes from the line are the most for the program since the Ducks sank 26 against Houghton on Jan. 18, 2019. The Ducks were an impressive 13 for 14 in the second half.
  • Stevens did not concede a fast-break point.
  • Each team had four blocks.

Unsung Hero
  • Damera came off the bench to total a game- and career-high 12 points in 13 second-half minutes. The Sugarland, Texas native was a perfect 6 for 6 from the line.

From the Sidelines - Head Coach Megan Haughey
  • "I thought our defensive intensity and control of the boards allowed us to get great stops tonight. I thought Kaitlyn Rothwell and Ashlynn Barry came into the game and provided a great spark and to see their chemistry on the floor was fun to watch."
  • "Mikayla Rutgers continues to grow her game and I thought her focus on the dirty work, boards, and using her length on the defensive end of the floor made us better tonight."

Up Next
  • Women's basketball returns to Pennsylvania to continue MAC Freedom play on Jan. 22 against Lycoming in Williamsport.
  • The Ducks defeated the Warriors 68-35 on Dec. 4 in Canavan Arena in what is believed to be the first meeting between the programs.
