ST. DAVIDS, Pa. (Oct. 15, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team earned a 2-1 comeback victory over Eastern University on Saturday afternoon. Senior
Lynda Farinella scored the game-winning goal just 29 second into overtime to give Stevens their third-straight win.
The Ducks were able to pressure the Eagles in the opening quarter. They took four shots and forced the Eastern goalkeeper to make two saves while the defense held the Eagles to zero shots in the opening 15 minutes. Despite the pressure, the Ducks were unable to break through and the score was tied 0-0 headed in the second.
The first goal of the game came in the second. Eastern was able to bounce back from a slow start and Morgan Ruhl found the back of the net with eight minutes left in the half to take a 1-0 lead. The Eagles outshot Stevens 3-2 in the half and held a 3-1 advantage in penalty corners. The Ducks placed two shots on goal but the Eastern back line and goalkeeper were once again up to the task and kept Stevens out of the net and they went into halftime tied 0-0.
Stevens continued to go on the offensive to open the second half. The Ducks took four more shots in the third and forced Eastern's Abby Agapito to make three more saves in the quarter. Stevens earned two penalty corners as well as they looked to crawl their way back into the game. They went into the final quarter still trailing 1-0 and hoped their persistence would pay off in the final 15 minutes.
The Ducks saw their efforts finally rewarded six minutes into the fourth. Sophomore
Emily Smart shortly after a penalty corner and was assisted by Farinella to tie the game 1-1. Neither side was able to break the stalemate in regulation and the game went into overtime. 29 seconds into the overtime period, Farinella redirected a penalty corner from junior
Julia Zatyko and Stevens earned an impressive 2-1 victory.
With the win, the Ducks improved to 9-6 on the season and the Eagles fell to 4-10.
