HOBOKEN, N.J. (Oct. 8, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team earned an impressive 6-0 victory at home over Wilkes University in a MAC Freedom matchup. Senior
Lynda Farinella led the way for the Ducks with two goals and two assists.
It did not take long for Stevens to take the lead. They took a 1-0 advantage just two minutes into the game. Sophomore
Makenna Quigley received a pass from Farinella in front of the net and slotted it into the right side of the goal. The Ducks scored twice more in the first quarter. First-year Gabi Maroney scored a goal that was reminiscent of the first of the game and was assisted by sophomore
Emily Smart. Farinella rounded out the first by scooping up a loose rebound and firing it home to give Stevens a 3-0 lead headed into the second quarter.
The Ducks scored just once in the second. Farinella found the back of the net on an unassisted effort. Her initial shot was saved and then she scooped up the rebound and made her second attempt count by finding the back of the net and giving her team a 4-0 lead. Stevens held a 12-3 advantage in shots and a 4-1 advantage in penalty corners headed into halftime.
Stevens continued to dominate play in the second half. Smart scored in the third to extend the lead to 5-0. She picked up a Farinella shot that deflected off a defender and sent it past the Wilkes goalkeeper. The Ducks' sixth goal came in the fourth quarter. Maroney played a ball past the Wilkes defense and first-year
Elizabeth Sullivan scored on a wide-open net for her first collegiate goal to make the score 6-0.
With the win, Stevens improved to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Wilkes fell to 2-9 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
Inside the Numbers
- Fifth-year Emily Franco, first-year Lily Wierzbicki and junior Amanda Murnick all saw action in net for Stevens. Franco got the start and was credited with the win.
- The Ducks did not allow a single shot on goal and earned their third shutout of the season.
- Stevens led in shots by a total of 24-4 and led in penalty corners by a total of 11-2.
