HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 19, 2022) – Junior
Mike Goodall had a team-high 15 points and sophomore
Jack Spellman added 11 points and five rebounds, but the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team fell to the University of Scranton 82-61 Saturday in a non-conference matchup at Canavan Arena.
Junior
Alex Ratner came off the bench to add 10 points for the Ducks, who dropped their fourth straight in falling to 0-4.
Stephen Braunstein had a game-high 22 points on 4 for 7 shooting from behind the arc and Will McLoughlin added 20 points for the Royals, who improved to 4-0. The contest marked the first-ever meeting between the programs.
Scranton jumped in front early in the first half, connecting on its first seven attempts from the floor to build a 22-4 before the Ducks forced the Royals' first miss from the floor.
Ratner converted his own offensive rebound and Spellman added a transition three after Goodall threw a well-placed outlet pass. Goodall would connect on a three of his own to pull the Ducks back within 10, but the 10-point margin would be as close as the home team would get.
Shooting was certainly the story of the game as Scranton shot nearly 60% from the floor, including a 6 for 11 performance from behind the arc, in building as much as a 29-point lead in the contest. Conversely, the Ducks were certainly efficient from the floor in their own right, finishing 13 for 27 in the second half, while also connecting on just one less three (9) than Scranton (10).
The Royals opened second-half scoring with back-to-back 3-pointers to push their lead back over 20 points. Spellman hit a short jumper for the Ducks' first points of the second stanza, drawing Stevens to within 18, but Braunstein scored five straight points to swell the lead back to 29.
