ANNVILLE, Pa. (November 21, 2022) – Senior
Hunter Gutierrez of No. 5 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling was named Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Wrestler of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
The award is the first for the Lacey Township, New Jersey native and the first for the wrestling program this season.
"Hunter was on a mission this past week in Wisconsin," head coach
Joe Favia said. "He faced challenges along the way, but overcame them, finding ways to win in dominant fashion. Thanks to his performance, for the second year in a row, we bring the Most Outstanding Wrestler award back to New Jersey."
"It's tough to make these trips and be displaced from your routine," Favia continued. "But, this team builds confidence in those environments and we are excited for the challenge ahead."
Gutierrez earned the distinction of being named Most Outstanding Wrestler at the prestigious CUW Open to wrap up the Ducks' Wisconsin trip. Each of Gutierrez's five victories in the event came with bonus points as the Lacey Township, New Jersey native totaled three pins, a tech fall and a major on his way to a 149-pound title. Two of Gutierrez's three pins on the day came over nationally-ranked wrestlers in the final two rounds of the tournament: first, Gutierrez pinned No. 7 Javen Estrada of North Central in the first round and then the fourth-year wrestler used a first-period pin of Wisconsin-Whitewater's fifth-ranked Jake Buford to win the individual title. Gutierrez is the second Duck to earn the CUW MOW accolade after alumnus Brett Kaliner received the accolade in 2021.
Gutierrez also scored a 6-4 decision victory over Wisconsin-La Crosse's Parker Kratchovill during the Ducks' top-five showdown with the Eagles that opened the Midwest trip.
Up Next: No. 5 Wrestling returns to the mats on Friday, Dec. 2 for the two-day New Standard Corporation Invitational, hosted by York College of Pennsylvania.
