HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 22, 2022) – Junior
Elissa Nsenkyire led four players in double figures with 16 points to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team to an 83-48 victory over Hunter College Tuesday in a non-conference contest at Canavan Arena.
Sophomore
Lucy Alberici came off the bench with 15 points and graduate student
Jess Broad added 14 points and five rebounds for the Ducks, who won their fourth straight to improve to 5-1.
Alexa Charles had a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Hunter, who dropped to 4-3. The Ducks have won each of the last four meetings.
Stevens used a 12-0 run in the third quarter to break the game open after Hunter had trimmed the Ducks' lead down to just five points. Broad got the run started, hitting a long jumper off a cross-court feed from Alberici. Graduate student
Amber Porrett went 1 for 2 from the line and Broad hit another jumper to push the lead back to double digits. First-year
Leyla Castro stripped Kimberly Lau leading to an easy basket for Porrett. An offensive foul returned the ball to the home team and Broad made it three baskets in three possessions with another jumper. Alberici capped the run with a long three to push the lead to 17.
Despite the final margin, it was Hunter that got off to a fast start, scoring on four of its first five possessions to take a 9-2 lead after Kennedy DeRuy's short jumper. The Ducks began to climb back in the game after Nsenkyire forced a turnover and found senior
Danielle Cornetta for a fast-break basket. Castro would feed Cornetta for another layup three minutes later to put the Ducks in front for good. Nsenkyire converted a three-point play in the final seconds of the opening quarter to send Stevens into the first break with a 21-16 lead.
First-year
Sammy Shea scored the first points of her collegiate career in the fourth quarter with a nifty driving layup.
