Men’s Basketball Pulls Away from Misericordia for 82-75 Victory

Spellman with career-high 30 points to help Ducks pick up conference win

HOBOKEN, N.J. (December 3, 2022)  – Sophomore Jack Spellman had a career-high 30 points to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team to an 82-75 victory over Misericordia University Saturday in a MAC Freedom matchup at Canavan Arena.

Junior Mike Goodall added a career-high 22 points and senior Conor Coffey chipped in with 14 for the Ducks, who scored seven straight points down the stretch to win their fourth straight and even their record at 4-4 on the year, which includes a perfect 2-0 mark in conference play.

Kevin Lazdowsky had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead Misericordia, who fell to 4-4 and to 1-1 in the MAC Freedom. The Ducks' victory, their third straight over Misericordia, snapped the Cougars' two-game winning streak.

Spellman, who finished 9 for 17 on the day, connected for his biggest basket of the day late in the second quarter, making a long three after Coffey found the second-year forward open on the wing. The basket pushed the Ducks' lead to five and was part of a 7-0 run by Stevens over a two-minute stretch after Nick Prociak made a layup to draw the teams even at 73 with a little over two minutes left in regulation. Senior Brett Bischoping made a layup to set off the run, with Coffey again setting the table. Coffey finished with six assists (without a turnover).

In addition to the best scoring performance of his career, Spellman also pulled down 14 rebounds for his second straight double-double and fourth of the season. The Westfield, New Jersey product went 4 for 7 from behind the arc and an impressive 8 for 9 from the line to surpass his previous career high of 24.

The Ducks clamped down on Misericordia down the stretch, holding the Cougars without a field goal over the final 2:14 and to just seven points over the final 6:11 to close out the victory,

Trailing by one at halftime, Stevens caught fire in the second half, shooting over 50% from the floor (16 for 30), including 5 of 9 (55.6%) from long distance. The Ducks went 4 for 4 from the line in the final 33 seconds to close the door on a Misericordia comeback.

Pivotal Point
  • Tied at 73, Bischoping set a solid screen to free up Coffey on the left wing. Coffey dribbled to the top of the key and found a cutting Bischoping just in front of the restricted area.
  • The Austin, Texas native elevated over Prociak for a layup to put the Ducks in front for good.
  • Bischoping finished with a season-high eight points. He also grabbed three rebounds and blocked two shots.

  • The Ducks held a 36-30 edge on the boards, including a slim 9-7 margin on the offensive glass.
  • Both teams found success on their second-chance opportunities, with the Ducks scoring 13, while the Cougars had 12.
