HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 11, 2022) – Fourteen different student-athletes had at least two points as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team defeated Delaware Valley University 75-48 Wednesday in a MAC Freedom matchup at Canavan Arena.
Senior
Allie Moss led the offense with 14 points and senior
Jess Broad added 12 for the Ducks, who moved to 16-4 on the year and to 11-2 in conference play. The victory secured the #2 seed in the upcoming MAC Freedom Tournament. It is the highest postseason seed for the program since the Ducks earned the top seed in the 2017 Empire 8 Conference Tournament. The team's .800 winning percentage is the second-highest number produced under 10th-year head coach
Megan Haughey.
Haley Keenan had a game-high 15 points and Lauren Moretti added 14 for the Aggies, who fell to 6-12 on the year and to 2-12 in the MAC Freedom. Stevens has won all three meetings between the teams. Delaware Valley is a half-game ahead of FDU-Florham for the right to host the MAC Freedom's play-in game.
The Ducks opened the contest with a strong first quarter, shooting nearly 50% from the floor (9 for 19) to open a 15-point lead. Moss was especially on target in the opening stanza, making 3 of her 4 attempts from behind the arc to produce more points (9) than the Ducks allowed (8). The Ducks held the Aggies to 4 of 12 shooting, including 0 for 3 from long range, while also forcing six turnovers. Stevens turned three offensive rebounds into five second-chance points and only committed two turnovers.
After Delaware Valley cut into the Ducks' lead in the second quarter, the Ducks rebounded in a big way in the third quarter, making more than half of their attempts from the floor in pushing their advantage back over 20. Broad and Moss totaled 11 of the Ducks' 17 third-quarter points and a renewed defensive effort forced six Delaware Valley turnovers and produced a 13-2 edge on the boards.
Stevens outscored Delaware Valley 25-18 in the final quarter, with 11 players netting at least two points. The Ducks shot over 50% from the floor in the second half (17 for 30) and had a 23-9 edge on the boards.
Pivotal Point
- Kaela Stankiewicz made a layup at the start of the third quarter to trim Stevens' lead to 10.
- After a turnover, Keenan missed a driving layup, which was rebounded by senior Vanessa Elliott.
- Elliott fired an outlet pass to Broad, who sank a pull-up jumper to give the Ducks a 35-23 lead. The fast-break basket sparked a 10-2 run that returned a 20-point lead for the Ducks.
Inside the Numbers
- For the game, Stevens shot 44.8% from the floor, highlighted by a 60% shooting performance in the fourth quarter. Stevens held the Aggies to 35.7 percent, including a 3 for 13 performance from behind the arc.
- Broad pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, including four on the offensive glass, as Stevens outrebounded Delaware Valley 46-29. Madyson Smith grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to lead the Aggies.
- Senior Amber Porrett dished out a career-high four assists. The Ducks totaled 24 assists on 30 baskets and are averaging 16.9 assists per game. Broad handed out a career-high seven to lead both sides.
- Junior Kaitlyn Rothwell and senior Meghan Douglas each blocked two shots. As a team, Stevens is ranked 42nd in the country in blocks per game.
- Stevens has now held 10 opponents under 50 points this season. The Ducks rank 31st in scoring defense this season.
- Sophomore Anika Damera went 2 for 2 from the line and is now 8 for 8 on the season.
- Moss nabbed three steals as Stevens totaled 11.
- First-year Lucy Alberici led all players with a +24 ranking.
- Stevens scored 19 points on 20 Delaware Valley turnovers. The Ducks also held the advantage in second-chance points (14-10) and fast-break points (25-2).
- Each team scored 30 points in the paint.
- The Ducks made 9 of their 11 free throws.
Unsung Hero
- Sophomore Ashlynn Barry finished with four points and a pair of rebounds over 10 minutes. The Chatham, New Jersey native also recorded her first career block, while also adding a steal and an assist.
