DALLAS, Pa. (February 12, 2022) – First-year
Jack Spellman posted his fifth career double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead four players in double figures as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team defeated Misericordia University 89-53 Saturday in a MAC Freedom matchup at the Anderson Center.
Junior
Conor Coffey had 14 points and junior
Matt Crowley added 12 for the Ducks, who scored their most points in a game since scoring 97 against Hartwick on Jan. 8, 2019. The victory was the third straight for the Ducks, who moved to 11-8 on the year and to 10-4 in league play. The win moved Stevens one step closer to securing the #2 seed in the MAC Freedom Tournament. A victory over FDU-Florham secures the second seed for the Ducks and guarantees that, at the very least, the team's quarterfinal game will be played in Canavan Arena.
Kevin Lazdowsky scored 14 points for the Cougars, who fell to 8-15 on the year and to 6-8 in the MAC Freedom. Stevens moved to 3-1 all-time against Misericordia.
Although Stevens won the opening tip, it was Misericordia that jumped on the board first, with a Kevin Hornung layup. The teams would combine to score on four straight possessions before Joseph Baldachino gave the home team its final lead of the contest after a long jumper.
Coffey's short jumper put the Ducks in front for good and another short floater extended the Ducks' lead to three. A long three from graduate student
Matt LaCorte pushed the run to seven as Stevens scored on three straight possessions to take a 16-9 lead.
While the offense was heating up, the defense was tightening up, holding the Cougars for over five minutes in taking control of the game. In the first half, the Ducks forced Misericordia into shooting just 10 for 33 (30.3%) from the floor and 15% from behind the arc in opening a 21-point halftime lead. The Ducks made 21 of their 38 attempts (55%) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, with Spellman and Coffey each netting double figures to lead the way.
Spellman finished the game 7 for 12 from the floor, including 2 for 5 behind the arc. The Westfield, New Jersey native grabbed four offensive rebounds and seven on the defensive side and has reached double digits in rebounding in six of his last seven games.
Stevens took good care of the ball in the opening frame, committing just two turnovers. Conversely, the Ducks nearly turned all of Misericordia's eight first-half turnovers into points, scoring 15 points. A quarter of the Ducks' 46 first-half points (11) came on the fast break.
The Ducks received contributions from the entire roster in the second half, seeing 10 different players score at least two points in the easy victory. The Ducks finished 39 for 77 from the field and finished with their second-high field-goal percentage of the season.
Pivotal Point
- A 9-0 Stevens run turned a 9-8 deficit into a 17-9 advantage in the first half.
Inside the Numbers

The Ducks are also ranked 31st in scoring defense, holding teams to 63.9 points per game.
- The Ducks held a 47-34 edge on the boards, including a 15-10 edge on the offensive glass. The Ducks' edge in offensive rebounding led to an 18-11 margin in second-chance points.

- The Ducks controlled the paint, finishing with a 56-26 edge in points in the paint.

Unsung Hero
- Sophomore Matthew Coletti went 2 for 3 from behind the arc over six minutes to finish with six points, marking the first points of his collegiate career. The Port Washington, New York native was one of three players to connect from long range.
From the Court - Head Coach Bobby Hurley
- "We played great today. It was our most complete game of the year. I couldn't be happier on how we defended, pushed the pace and shared the ball for a full 40 minutes."
