No. 12 Men’s Lacrosse Drops Season Opener to Dickinson

Sullivan and Savarese score twice, but Ducks fall to Red Devils to open up 2022

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 19, 2022)  – Sophomore Jack Savarese and senior Brendan Sullivan each scored twice, but No. 12 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse fell to Dickinson College 13-6 Saturday in a non-conference matchup at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

First-year Thomas Sabatino netted his first collegiate goal in his first career contest and junior Trevor Carroll also found the back of the net for the Ducks, who fell to 0-1.

Owen Porter netted four goals and Will Farrell and Matt Thurston each scored twice for the Red Devils, who improved to 1-0. The contest, which is believed to be the second all-time meeting between the programs, marked both teams' season opener.

"Very tough one for us," said head coach Gene Peluso. "We did not take care of the ball in the clear and on offense and the Dickinson goalie was sensational. Twenty-four saves is certainly a game-changer and he was really dialed in. We need to improve on a good amount of our play and execute much better moving forward. We now prepare for a very good and well coached Haverford program."

Senior Tyler Ryan had a pair of assists and Savarese, Sabatino and graduate student Ryan Caplis each added one to round out the Ducks scoring.

Dickinson, who received nine votes in the most-recent United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association poll, jumped on the board first, with Sean Campbell finding the back of the net four minutes into the contest. Farrell followed with his first of the day, before Carroll scored to bring Stevens within one.

Skylar Schluter scored with a little more than a minute left in the opening period but Savarese answered with a power-play goal early in the second quarter to bring the Ducks within one. The Red Devils would score six straight goals bridging the second and third quarters to open a 9-2 lead midway through the third period. Porter scored two of his four goals during the game-changing sequence and both tallies came on the man-advantage. The teams played most of the third stanza in a snow squall that eventually covered the DeBaun Athletic Complex turf.

Sullivan converted a Ryan feed for his first goal of the year to stop the Dickinson run, but the Red Devils would score the first two markers of the final quarter to essentially put the game out of reach. Sabatino, Sullivan and Savarese scored in the final seven minutes to provide the final margin.

Sophomore Jake Zeyher matched a career high with 15 saves, but took the loss in the cage for the Ducks. Chris Brandau stopped 24 shots to earn the victory for Dickinson.

The game was played with a great deal of pace that resulted in a combined 89 shots. Dickinson finished with a slim 45-44 advantage, although Stevens fired off 18 attempts in the final period. Caplis led both sides with 15 shots, including nine on-goal, while Porter had eight to pace Dickinson.

Stevens forced 13 of Dickinson's 24 turnovers. Senior Aidan Hinphy and junior Joseph DeGuida each caused three, while Zeyher, sophomore Russell Eberding, graduate student Owen Stempkovski, Cawley, sophomore Jesse Tareco, senior Tom Conway and first-year Bryan Creamer each had one. Dickinson forced eight of the Ducks' 17 miscues. The teams combined for 14 turnovers in the third quarter, where the conditions changed significantly with the snow squall.

Dickinson won 12 of the game's 19 faceoffs. Eberding won six times for the Ducks as he made his Stevens debut; the second-year faceoff specialist transferred from Army. Conway was a perfect 1 for 1 in the 'X' to account for the Ducks' wins. John McKee had all 12 of Dickinson's faceoff wins.

The Ducks finished with a 36-31 advantage in ground balls. Zeyher picked up six for the Ducks, while Hinphy added four. Creamer and Ryan scooped up four each as 14 different players had at least one. McKee matched Zeyher for game-high honors, picking up six.

The Red Devils finished 3 of 8 on the man-advantage, however the Ducks kept the Dickinson powerplay group in check in the opening period, not allowing a goal on three extra-man opportunities. The Ducks went 1 for 5 on the day, with Savarese's first-quarter goal accounting for Stevens' lone powerplay goal of the day.

Stevens went 21 for 26 on its clearing attempts, while Dickinson finished 23 of 25. The Ducks were perfect (3 for 3) in the final period and 7 for 8 in the second.

Up Next: Men's Lacrosse heads to the Keystone State on Feb. 23 for a non-conference matchup at Haverford. The Ducks are 5-4 all-time against the Fords, but have won the last five meetings.
