Elliott’s Career Night Sends Women’s Basketball to MAC Freedom Semis with 59-37 victory over Lycoming

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 23, 2022)  – Senior Vanessa Elliott netted a career-high 16 points to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team to a 59-37 over Lycoming College Wednesday in a MAC Freedom semifinal matchup at Canavan Arena.

Senior Jess Broad added 11 points and classmate Allie Moss had nine points and five assists for the Ducks, who moved to 18-6 on the year. The 18 wins are tied for the third-most under 10th-year head coach Megan Haughey. Stevens advances to the MAC Freedom semifinals, where the Ducks will host King's, who defeated Arcadia 74-67, in Canavan Arena on Feb. 25. The double-digit victory is the seventh conference tournament win for the program under Haughey's leadership.

Emily Lockard and Ashley Yoh each had nine points for the Warriors, who closed their season 6-19. The Ducks have won all three meetings between the programs.

Elliott went 3 for 7 in the first half and 2 for 5 in the second to total 16 points, surpassing her previous career high of 15 set on Dec. 28, 2019 against The College of New Jersey. The Denville, New Jersey native finished 7 for 12 from the floor and made her only free throw to total 16 points. Elliott also pulled down three rebounds.

The Ducks' defense was on full display from the opening tip. Stevens held Lycoming to just seven points in the opening quarter, on 7 of 17 shooting, and followed that up by holding the Warriors without a field goal in the second. Stevens has held Lycoming to exactly seven points in the first quarter in each of the three meetings between the teams.

After scoring the first eight points of the game, Lycoming pulled within five after Lockard went 1 for 2 at the line. Sophomore Elissa Nsenkyire answered with a short jumper to give the Ducks a 14-7 advantage heading into the second quarter.

Stevens would break the game open in the second quarter, outscoring Lycoming 13-4. Stevens hit six of their 19 shots to total 13 points, while holding Lycoming to just four free throws. The Warriors missed all nine of their attempts from the floor, including four tries from behind the arc. The Ducks also forced nine turnovers in the stanza and turned them into eight points. Conversely, the Ducks protected the ball, committing just three turnovers in the frame.

The third quarter provided the most competitive action between the teams, with the sides combining for 33 points. The Ducks returned to their stingy ways in the fourth quarter, allowing just two baskets to the Warriors to secure the wire-to-wire victory.
