HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 27, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team continued to see its starting pitching shine in the early portion of the schedule as first-year
Jordan Fisse and junior
Ryan Shea again turned in outstanding performances on the mound in a doubleheader sweep over Swarthmore College at Dobbelaar Field.
With the wins, Stevens moved its record to 6-2, while Swarthmore closed play at 2-2. The doubleheader was the first meeting between the teams since 1998 and just the second and third meetings since 1942. The Garnet lead the all-time series 12-9.
"Very satisfying wins today against a Swarthmore program that has been quite good over the past several years," remarked head coach
Kristaps Aldins. "It was great to jump on top early in game one and we were able to keep things rolling in the second one as well. Our starting pitching is giving us quality outings pretty deep into games and our offense seems to be beginning to click, which bodes well moving forward.
Justin Doyle has also really come into his own out of the bullpen and is giving us outstanding work in the highest of high leverage situations, which is absolutely fantastic to see."
Fisse (2-0) was in-control for the majority of the opener, as he worked around a run in the fourth to pick up the win. He went six innings, giving up a run on five hits and collected seven strikeouts, before giving way to Doyle. The fellow right-hander was also outstanding, scattering just two hits and an earned run over three innings to pick up his first career save. The pair of pitching performances powered the Ducks to a 4-2 win.
The Ducks wasted no time getting to the Garnet's starting pitcher Jack Bowling (0-1) walked senior leadoff hitter
Brett Mendez and junior
Michael Reyes. After a flyout, graduate student
Hunter Silvernail stepped to the plate and tanked a blast well over the left-field fence for a three-run homer.
After Swarthmore scratched across a run in the fourth, the Ducks padded their lead one inning later. Silvernail led off with a walk and switched places with senior
Ryan Wall after the latter hit into a fielder's choice. Graduate student
Thomas Paulich singled to right to move Wall to third and sophomore
Johnny Albrecht singled sharply up the middle to score Wall and push the Ducks' lead to three.
Stevens was led in game two offensively by Silvernail who reached base four times thanks to his home run and three walks. Paulich finished 2 for 3 with a stolen base and senior
Ryan Finegan, who reached base three times.
Bowling pitched just a third of an inning, yielding three earned runs on one hit with three walks.
In game two, Shea (2-0) continued the strong performances on the mound, pitching into the sixth inning to earn his second victory of the year. It was his third straight strong start to begin the year as he scattered seven hits and two earned runs while striking out a career-high eight and walking just one. Sophomore
Jacob Buurman looked sharp in finishing the victory, allowing an unearned run over 2 2-3 innings of work, marking the second-year reliever's longest outing of the season..
Jack Fitzgerald (0-1) was credited with the loss for the Garnet going two innings, yielding one hit, two walks, three unearned runs and picking up three strikeouts.
As they did in the opener, the Ducks wasted little time in getting their offense on track in the second game. Trailing 1-0 after Austin Burge homered off Shea, Stevens responded in a huge way using a three-run second, a four-run third and another pair of runs to break the game open.
Silvernail started things off in the second, reaching on a hit-by-pitch. Wall and Albrecht walked to load the bases and the Ducks scored their first run of the game on a throwing error on Finegan's one-out fielder's choice. Mendez would provide the big blow in the inning with a two-out single to left to plate Albrecht and Finegan also came around to score on a misplay by the Swarthmore left fielder.
Junior
Ben Tobio sparked the offense in the third, leading off the frame with an infield single. The backstop promptly stole second and scored on another Swarthmore error. After a pitching change, Mendez again had the big blow in the frame, driving in two with another single to left.
Wall and Paulich drove in runs in the fourth as the Ducks scored totaled nine runs against three Swarthmore pitchers.
Up Next: Stevens will continue its six game homestand against Montclair State University on Mar. 4 at Dobbelaar Field. The Ducks hold a 1-2 all-time record versus the Red Hawks and dropped a high-scoring 14-11 home matchup to Montclair back in 2017.
