READING, Pa. (March 11, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team came back from two separate three-goal deficits to defeat Albright College 13-10 Friday in a non-conference matchup at Gene L. Shirk Stadium. The contest was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, but the contest was moved up a day due to the projected inclement weather forecast.
Senior
Natalie Fitzpatrick had five goals and senior
Camryn Rogers had two goals and two assists for the Ducks, who won their fifth straight to move to a perfect 5-0.
Lauren China had five goals and an assist to finish with a game-high six points for the Lions, who dropped to 1-3. It is believed to be the first meeting between the programs.
Junior
Zoe Cook had a hat trick and senior
Maeve McGovern had a goal and two assists as six different players found the scoresheet. First-year
Emily Smart contributed a goal and an assist and junior
Maddie Schmidt rounded out Stevens' scoring for the day with a single tally.
Senior
Lauren Cunniff was excellent between the pipes for the Ducks, registering 13 saves, including two in the fourth quarter. Jessica Sedor had 4 in the loss for Albright.
This was an exciting seesaw affair that saw seven lead changes between the teams. The Ducks got on the board first with an unassisted tally by
Zoe Cook just 28 seconds into the match. China responded for the Lions to even the score. Fitzpatrick and Smart connected to give Stevens back the lead, but Albright responded with four unanswered goals from Abigail Hail, Katelyn Patrick, and two from China to jump out to a 5-2 advantage. Stevens began its comeback on Cook's second of the day only to see Albright regain its three-goal lead less than a minute later.
The Ducks then made a big run scoring four unanswered goals to reclaim their lead. Fitzpatrick netted her first of the day to begin the run and her second goal bookended the stretch, surrounding goals by Smart from Rogers.
This is where the action really heated up. Albright's Ashleigh Tortorice tied things up, but Fitzpatrick completed her first hat trick of the season to put Stevens back in front. However, the Lions managed to even the score 8-8 with only three seconds remaining in the first half when China found the back of the net to send the teams into the intermission.
Albright kept this momentum going in the third quarter, when China scored less than two minutes into the frame to put Albright back in front. However, the Ducks responded with five of the next six goals to secure the victory. Rogers began the stretch with goals from McGovern and Cook handing Stevens an 11-9 lead. Tortorice pulled the home team back to within one with a goal in the final minute of the third, but the Ducks scored the final two goals of the game to secure the victory.
Schmidt and Fitzpatrick each scored on the powerplay in the final period and Cunniff stopped scoring chances by Katelyn Patrick and Tortorice to close out the victory.
Stevens forced 14 Lion turnovers in the contest. Senior Jose Cook and sophomore
Emily Leiby each caused two. Rogers, McGovern,
Zoe Cook, Schmidt, first-year Emily Schug, and senior
Morgan Westerby had one. Lexi Pitkevits led Albright with three.
The Ducks held a narrow 14-13 edge in draw controls. Rogers had a game-high eight, while Westerby had three, Leiby had two and Fitzpatrick one to round out the Ducks' efforts. Chloe Fornoff had four for the Lions.
Albright led in ground balls 11-10. Leiby, Fitzpatrick, and junior
Josie Cook had two each. Patrick and Lexi Pitkevits each had three for the Lions in defeat.
The Ducks were 16 for 18 on clears compared to Albright's 15 for 18.
Stevens converted two free-position shots as Fitzpatrick and Schmidt were each 1-1. China was 3 for 4 and Patrick 1-1 for the Lions. The game was a highly physical one throughout as there were nine penalties, five for the Lions and four for the Ducks.
Up Next: Women's Lacrosse will travel down Route 3 on Mar. 16 to take on Montclair State at Sprague Field. Stevens holds a wide 15-8 edge in the all-time series with the Ducks coming away with a narrow 11-10 victory back in 2020 at DeBaun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J.
