MONTCLAIR, N.J. (March 16, 2022) – Sophomore
Emily Leiby totaled a career-high five points to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team to a 12-8 victory over Montclair State University Wednesday night in a non-conference matchup at Sprague Field.
Junior
Zoe Cook had a hat trick and senior
Camryn Rogers had two goals and an assist for the Ducks, who continued their outstanding start in moving to 6-0.
Kaitlyn Arcede had three goals and Rhiannon Brown added a pair of goals and an assist for the Redhawks, who dropped to 1-4. Stevens has won four of the last five meetings between the programs.
First-year
Emily Smart had a goal and an assist as seven different players finished with at least one point. Seniors
Morgan Westerby netted two goals and classmate
Maeve McGovern added a goal and an assist. First-year
Alison Lax dished out an assist to round out the Ducks' offensive contributions.
Senior
Lauren Cunniff made 10 saves to earn the victory. The Montgomery, New Jersey native posted her fourth straight double-digit save performance. Allyn Lilien stopped 12 shots for Montclair State.
The Red Hawks opened the scoring when Tristin Konen found the back of the net. The Ducks, however, responded in a big way ripping three straight to take a 3-1 lead. Rogers fed Leiby for her first goal of the day to put the Ducks on the board and then Leiby set up Cook for her first of the evening. Rogers capped the three-goal outburst with an unassisted goal with just over five minutes left in the opening period. The Red Hawks cut the lead to 3-2 on a woman-down goal by Amber Gonzalez, but the Ducks beat the first quarter buzzer with an unassisted tally by Leiby with just five seconds left to make it a 4-2 score heading into the second period. Leiby finished the night with three goals and two assists.
It was all Ducks in the second quarter as they outscored the home team 4-0 to extend their lead to six at halftime. Westerby opened the scoring with an unassisted power-play goal. Leiby completed her second career hat trick to push the Ducks' advantage to four. Westerby found the back of the net 30 seconds later and the Ducks closed out the period on a tally by Smart.
The third period was a defensive battle as the two teams combined for two goals. Montclair State made it 8-3 on a goal from Arcede, but McGovern reclaimed the six-goal edge for the Ducks on a goal assisted by Smart.
The fourth quarter started hot for Stevens thanks to a pair of goals from Cook to make it 11-3 with just over 10 minutes to play. The Red Hawks tried to rally, scoring three straight goals, but Rogers interrupted this comeback attempt on an unassisted score and then time ran out on Montclair State despite a pair of late goals to account for the 12-8 final.

Natalie Fitzpatrick led the way with three caused turnovers each. Seniors
Josie Cook and
Meredith Conlin each forced two, while Cook, Lax and first-year
Erica Schug each finished with one. Konen caused four Duck miscues for Montclair State.
Each side finished with 12 draw controls. Fitzpatrick and Westerby led Stevens with five each, while Rogers had two. Gonzalez had a game-high seven to pace Montclair State.

Josie Cook, Conlin, Schug, and Cunniff each had three. McGovern scooped up two, while four Ducks: Fitzpatrick,

Lauren Malicki and
Maddie Schmidt each picked up one. Konen, Brown, and Lilien each had three to lead the Red Hawks.
The Ducks were 17 for 19 on clears, while Montclair State finished 15 for 18.
Stevens converted three free-position shots. Rogers, Westerby and Leiby each scored from eight meters, while Brown and Arcede each converted a free-position shot for Montclair State.
Up Next: Women's Lacrosse will travel to Radnor, Pennsylvania on Mar. 19 where they will square off with Cabrini University at ER Dixon Field. Stevens holds a 3-2 edge in the all-time series with the Ducks coming away with a convincing 16-5 victory back in 2010 in the last meeting between the programs.
