No. 20 Men’s Lacrosse Tripped Up by No. 14 Wesleyan

Caplis registers two goals to lead Duck offense

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (March 13, 2022) – Graduate student Ryan Kaplis scored twice, but No. 20 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team fell to No. 14 Wesleyan University 22-5 Sunday in a non-conference matchup at Citrin Field.
 
Sophomore Joseph Grippo, first-year Larson Cronk and junior Shaun Spiegel each scored for the Ducks, who fell to 2-5. Senior Michael Burns dished out an assist to round out the Ducks' offensive contributions.

Matt Gill led the Wesleyan offense with four goals and 10 assists. Jake Sexton, Justin Hazard and Spencer Robbins each had five points each for the Cardinals who improved to 3-0. The matchup, which was moved back a day due to inclement weather, was believed to be the first meeting between the teams.
 
Four Ducks saw time between the pipes. Sophomore Jake Zeyher started and collected six saves. First-years Cooper Foote and Justin Gold each saw snagged one save. Fellow first-year Quinton Smith took over down the stretch, but did not record a save. Colin Hanley made 10 saves to earn the victory for Wesleyan. Noah Lin played the final four-plus minutes, but did not register a save.
 
The Cardinals got on the board first in this one as Sexton found the back of the net just 88 seconds into the contest. The lead was extended to 2-0 only 32 seconds later when Gill and Hayden Leachman connected on Gil's first goal of the day. The Ducks responded quickly just 24 seconds when Caplis netted his first of the day. 
 
Wesleyan took control scoring six unanswered goals to close out the first quarter. Grippo scored on the man-advantage to begin the second quarter. However, scored twice late in the period to open an eight-goal lead. Caplis netted his second of the day with 23 seconds left in the frame.

Wesleyan came out hot in the second half and ran off seven unanswered goals to put the game out of reach. Spiegel scored his unassisted goal in the opening minute of the final quarter and Cronk netted the first goal of his career with 21 seconds remaining in the contest to provide the final margin.

Wesleyan finished with a 60-33 edge in shots. Of the Ducks' 33, 15 were on goal, while Wesleyan registered 30. Caplis led Stevens with seven shots, of which four were on goal. Sophomore Jack Savarese had five and senior Jackson Brown had three, including one on goal. Sexton and Gill had 13 and 11, respectively, for the Cardinals.
 
Stevens forced 23 turnovers while Wesleyan caused 26 miscues. Seven Ducks, graduate student Sean Scadeen, Grippo, junior David Bendis, junior Joe Cawley, senior Tom Conway, senior Tyler Ryan, sophomore Paddy Phelps, first-year Blake Creamer, and senior George Benway, caused one turnover each. Four Cardinals, Jacob Braunstein, Kyle Camphausen, Nolan Collins, and Charlie Silver caused two a-piece.
 
The Cardinals had the edge in faceoffs 20-10. Sophomore Russell Eberding won six and first-year Andrew Muller and sophomore Conner Park achieved two. Wesleyan's Tyler Campbell and Kevin Talbot each had a game-high nine faceoff wins.
 
Wesleyan controlled ground balls 45-24. Scadden and graduate student Owen Stempkovski led the Ducks with three. Eberding, Cawley, Caplis, and senior Craig Stockfeder had two. Campbell and Talbot led the way for the Cardinals with five a-piece.
 
Stevens went 1 for 9 on extra-man opportunities, while Wesleyan found success at a perfect 2 for 2 rate.
 
Stevens was 14 for 26 on its clearing attempts, while the Cardinals finished with an impressive 21 of 22.
 
Up Next: No. 20 Men's Lacrosse plays yet another national power on Saturday Mar. 19 when they return home to DeBaun Athletic Complex to face No. 3 Tufts University. The teams have matched up on nine occasions all-time with the Jumbos holding a perfect 9-0 record against the Ducks.
