WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (March 14, 2022) – Junior
Erin Kreis did what only three other Stevens Institute of Technology softball student-athletes have done before, spinning a no-hitter, to lead the Ducks to a convincing 9-0 victory against The College of Mount Saint Vincent Monday in the opening game of a non-conference doubleheader at Waterfront Park.
First-year
Kaitlin Smith then twirled a one-hitter as the Ducks then proceeded to sweep the doubleheader with a 16-0 victory in game two to move to 2-6 on the year. The contests marked the first two games of the season for the Dolphins, who dropped to 0-2.
Â
Kreis (1-3) was dominant right from the start, inducing a pop up on her second offering of the day and striking out back-to-back batters to close out the first inning. The Catonsville, Maryland native matched a career high with nine strikeouts and needed just 71 pitches to etch her name in program history. Kreis walked two and hit a batter to post her third career shutout. She joins alumnae Amanda Petrocelli (Mar. 26, 2010), Kayla Berardi (Mar. 30, 2011) and Molly Herforth (Mar. 30, 2011) in the Ducks' no-hitter club.
The Ducks offense wasted little time providing Kreis with a cushion, scoring twice off Katie Hutter (0-1) in the opening inning and twice more in the second, before breaking the game open with five runs in the fourth. Sophomore
Julia Baber led off with an infield single and moved to second on a single by senior
Lexi Gregule. Baber would score on the first of six Mount Saint Vincent errors and Gregule followed on sophomore
Madison Kidd's sacrifice fly.Â
Senior
Meg Halloran scored the Ducks' third run of the game, reaching on an infield bunt single and then coming all the way around to score after the ball was thrown into right field and then misplayed by the Dolphin right fielder. Guerrero drove in her second run of the day with a single through the left side to score Baber, who had reached on a single of her own.
The Ducks broke the game open in the fourth, scoring five runs on four hits, with a three-run error providing the big blow in the inning.
The early cushion proved to be the only runs Kreis would need on the day. The right-hander struck out at least one in every inning and the Dolphins only had one runner in scoring position. Kreis capped off her outstanding performance by striking out Brennah Heck-Rice for the second time.Â
Not to be outdone, Smith (1-2) nearly matched Kreis' performance, coming just two batters short of a second no-hitter.Â
Â
Stevens would get on the board early, scored three times in the first, followed by a massive 12-run inning in the second in which the Ducks sent 16 batters to the plate.Â
Â
But pitching was again the story, as Smith was arguably equally as impressive as Kreis, facing just two batters over the minimum in earning her first collegiate victory. The left-hander struck out five and hit a batter and held a no-hitter until Renee Hoerning connected for a one-out single through the left side in the fifth. Smith easily worked around the base runner to complete the shutout by retiring the last two hitters of the day on consecutive groundouts.
Â
Ten different Ducks recorded a hit in the game two victory, with Gregule and senior
Siobhan Cottell leading the way with two hits each. Gregule finished the contest 2 for 3 with a run scored, an RBI, and a stolen base, while Cottell went 2 for 4 with a run scored, a double, and three RBI.
Â
Baber was a force at the top of the lineup, reaching base twice and scoring a pair of runs, while also driving in one and stealing three bases. Halloran also proved hard to retire, going 1 for 1 with two runs scored, a triple an RBI and a walk. Finally, Kidd had an interesting day offensively, as she did not record an official at-bat, collecting a run on two free passes.
Â
Senior
Emily McGuire had a 1 for 1 day with a run scored and a stolen base, while sophomore
Carolyn Yahn went 1 for 2, as both players collected their first base hits of the season.
Â
First-years
Rachael Prescott,
Megan Curtis, and Subbiondo each collected their first collegiate hits of their career in the win.
Â
Mount Saint Vincent's Charlotte Kelly (0-1) was dealt the loss, lasting just one inning and giving up 11 runs on six hits with five walks. Hutter relieved Kelly and allowed five runs over the final three innings.
The contests were the first meetings between the programs since 2011. The Ducks have won all six meetings between the teams.
Â
Up Next: The Ducks' additional doubleheader against Mount Saint Vincent on Mar. 17 at Weehawken Waterfront Park in Weehawken, N.J. was canceled due to inclement weather. Next up for the Stevens softball nine will be a pair of home contests against Ramapo College on Mar. 24. The all-time series between the two teams stands at a 8-3 clip in the Roadrunners favor. The most recent meeting came in 2019 when the teams split a doubleheader.
