WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (April 13, 2022) – Sophomore
Julia Baber connected for a go-ahead home run in the fourth inning, as the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team defeated Ramapo College 5-4 Wednesday in the opening game of a non-conference doubleheader at Waterfront Park.
Stevens would drop the nightcap 10-1 to conclude play with a 7-11 record. Ramapo wrapped up play 15-6. Originally scheduled on Mar. 24, the doubleheader picked up in the second inning of the first game with the teams tied at three. Play was halted entering the bottom of the second inning, due to inclement weather at Waterfront Park. The doubleheader was split into two single games, with play continuing from the point of interruption in the opening game and the date of play reverting back to the originally scheduled March date, while game two was treated as a brand-new single game.
Baber led the way offensively, going a combined 2 for 4 with two RBI across the two games, while fifth-year
Siobhan Cottell added two hits for the Ducks. Mahogany Wheeler totaled four hits and scored twice to pace the Roadrunners.
In a wild first inning to start game one, each team scored three runs. The Roadrunners took an early lead, scoring on an RBI double to start and then tacking on two more runs. The Ducks responded in the bottom of the first with three runs all scored on errors. Senior
Lexi Gregule and Baber each scored on a throwing error and then sophomore
Madison Kidd scored on another throwing error to tie the game at 3-3.
Ramapo took back the lead in the third at 4-3, but a two-run blast from Baber's fourth-inning blast put the Ducks back in front for good. The Roadrunners mustered only two hits in the final three innings against junior
Erin Kreis (4-5). Kreis struck out seven and spun her sixth complete game of the season. Wheeler (6-5) allowed a pair of earned runs and struck out three in defeat.
Stevens fell behind early in the nightcap. The Roadrunners scored once in the first and then piled on six more runs in the third to take a 7-0 lead. Gregule drove in a run with a single in the fourth for the Ducks only run. The Roadrunners added three runs in the final two innings to get to 10. First-year Marissa DiPaolo (8-1) allowed an earned run on four hits and struck nine in the complete-game victory.
Stevens scratched across a run in the fourth. Cotrtell reached on a one-out infield single and moved to second on sophomore
Carolyn Yahn's single through the left side. Gregule reached on another infield single and because the ball was hit towards the edge of the outfield grass, Cottell hustled around third and scored for the Ducks' lone run of the contest.
First-year
Kaitlin Smith (3-5) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs. Sophomore
Megan Curtis threw a scoreless inning of relief.
Up Next: Stevens travels to Wilkes-Barre, Pa., for a double header against MAC Freedom opponent Wilkes University. The games are set to start at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
