Baseball Powers Past DeSales in MAC Freedom Opener

Pron picks up the win going five strong. Albrecht, Davis homer for the Ducks.

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. (March 18, 2022) – Sophomore Johnny Albrecht and junior Chris Davis each homered to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team past DeSales University 18-4 Friday in both teams' MAC Freedom opener at Weiland Park.

Junior Anthony Pron (4-2) started and earned the win on the mound allowing a pair of earned runs over five solid innings. This was the second consecutive win for the right-hander, who scattered eight hits and two walks and struck out eight. Three relievers closed out the victory, with first-year Matt Villapiano and sophomore Jacob Buurman each firing a scoreless frame.

Ryan Reiber (1-2) was tagged with the loss for DeSales giving up four runs on seven hits in four innings of work. With the win the Ducks improved to 11-5 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while the Bulldogs drop to 5-6 and 0-1 in the MAC Freedom.

"What a great way to open up conference play for us" commented head coach Kristaps Aldins. "We had numerous student-athletes step in tonight and play key roles. In particular, it was fantastic to see Johnny Albrecht and Chris Davis leave the yard and extend our lead in the middle part of the game."

The Ducks enjoyed six multiple-hit efforts. First-year Evan Pravato led the way going 4 for 5 with a run, a double and three RBI, and a walk. Albrecht also had a big 2 for 3 day with two runs, his home run, four RBI, and three walks. Junior Ben Tobio went 2 for 4 with two runs, a double, an RBI, a walk, a hit by pitch, and a stolen base. Meanwhile sophomore Christian Kreiser and senior Sutton Dole collected two hits a-piece with Dole scoring two runs and collecting an RBI. Kreiser stuffed the box score with three runs, two RBI, a walk, a hit by pitch, and a stolen base.

Robert Lamm and Trevor Learner had two hits each for DeSales.

Stevens got on the board in the first, thanks to a wild pitch and a two-out single from junior Michael Reyes. DeSales halved the lead on a bases-loaded walk to Gabe Diaz in the second and then jumped in front one inning later on Colin Trembley's two-run homer to left center.

The Ducks reclaimed the lead for good in the top of the fourth on a Davis sacrifice fly and a Tobio two-out double. The fifth inning saw an offensive explosion from Stevens as they batted around and extended their lead to a commanding 12-3 margin. In addition to the Albrecht and Davis homers, first-year Kevin Villares got involved offensively with his first collegiate hit and RBI. Kreiser capped the scoring in the inning with a two-run single to center.

After the teams traded runs in the sixth and seventh, the Ducks plated four more in the bottom of the eighth. A Dole singled brought in the first run, a bases-loaded walk from Albrecht scored the second, and Pravato capped his excellent day with a two-run knock to left. An unearned run in the top of the ninth closed-out the scoring for Stevens accounting for the 18-4 final.

Up Next: The Ducks return to Dobbelaar Field on Sunday to complete the three-game MAC Freedom series with the Bulldogs. With the win on Friday Stevens now holds an 8-4 edge over DeSales in the all-time series.
