Men’s Basketball Falls to No. 22 Williams in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

Ducks erase double-digit deficit, but fall to No. 22 Williams

ALLIANCE, Ohio (March 5, 2022)  – Junior Matt Crowley had a career-high 19 points but the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team's season came to an end Saturday evening with a 71-61 setback to No. 22 Williams College in the second round of the 2022 NCAA Division III Tournament. The contest was played at the McPherson Athletic Complex and was hosted by the University of Mount Union.

In his final collegiate contest, graduate student Alec DiPietrantonio finished with 16 points and eight rebounds for the Ducks, who closed their season at 17-9. The setback snapped the Ducks' nine-game winning streak.

Declan Porter matched Crowley with 19 points and Cole Prowitt-Smith had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Ephs, who won their second straight to improve to 18-4. Williams will meet Wabash College in the third round. The victory was the Ephs' 52nd in the NCAA Tournament and moved Williams to 3-1 all-time against Stevens.

Finding themselves down 13 at halftime, the gritty Ducks turned to their calling card to mount a comeback bid. Among the nation's leaders in field-goal percentage defense throughout the regular season, the Ducks held Williams to just nine field goals (9 for 28) over the final 20 minutes, including a 3 for 13 performance from behind the arc, to turn their double-digit deficit into a one-point advantage on graduate student David Dixon's hook shot with just over seven minutes left in regulation.

Crowley turned in one of the best shooting performances of his career in helping the Ducks erase their deficit. The Westfield, New Jersey product shot 6 for 8 (75%) in the second half, to amass 13 of his 19 points. Crowley finished 9 of 14 from the floor to surpass his previous career best of 16 points set earlier this season. The third-year guard reached double figures in six of his last eight contests and is averaging 15 points, 6 rebounds and 6.5 assists in the NCAA Tournament..

After Dixon's basket gave the Ducks a slim 52-51 lead, Williams had two cracks at jumping in front on its next possession, Nate Karren missed a tip-in before connecting on his second attempt, while also drawing contract from DiPietrantonio. Karren would make a free throw to again put Williams in front, but Crowley had the answer, draining a pull-up-jumper on the Ducks' next possession, to pull the teams even again.

Karren put Williams back in front for good on another hook shot, sparking a 9-0 run for Williams that ultimately proved too much to overcome.

Inside the Numbers
  • Despite Williams having an edge in rebounding, Williams finished with only a 12-8 edge in second-half points.
  • Williams won the battle of the boards, outrebounding Stevens 46-35, although the edge in second-chance points was significantly closer, with Williams holding a narrow 12 advantage.
  • Junior Conor Coffey led both teams with six assists.
  • Karren finished with a game-high five steals.
  • The game featured just three lead changes.
  • Stevens finished with a 16-14 edge in fast-break points.

Unsung Hero
  • Graduate student Maguire Sweeney matched a season high with seven rebounds in just 19 minutes.
