Third Quarter Barrage Leads No. 20 Men’s Lacrosse Past SUNY Oneonta

Senior Tyler Ryan hands out a career-best seven assists in the lopsided victory.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 5, 2022) – No. 20 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse scored on eight straight possessions to begin the third quarter to cruise to an 18-5 victory over SUNY Oneonta Saturday in a non-conference contest at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Senior Tyler Ryan led the way for the Ducks with two goals and a career-high seven assists. Seniors Michael Burns and Brendan Sullivan, as well as sophomore Jack Savarese, each netted four goals for the Ducks, who moved their record to 2-3.

Holding a one-goal lead at the intermission, Stevens came out of the locker room on fire in the third quarter, scoring eight times to break the game open. After Oneonta won the quarter-opening faceoff, the Ducks kept the Red Dragons off the board and followed with eight unanswered goals before the ball crossed back into the visitor's attacking third. Savarese scored three times during the sequence, with Sullivan also netting two goals in the period.

Graduate student Ryan Caplis chipped in with two goals and two assists of his own and senior Craig Stockfeder and junior Trevor Carroll each added a goal as seven different players found their way onto the scoresheet. Savarese handed out two assists, while Sullivan and Burns each added one to round out the Ducks' scoring.

Dean Cannon was the leading point-scorer for Oneonta with three goals on four shots, and Jack Dinnegan had a pair of assists for Oneonta, who dropped to 1-3. Saturday's contest marked the first-ever meeting between the teams.

"That was a great second half for us against a very good Oneonta program," head coach Gene Peluso said. "Oneonta played well against some tough teams in the first couple of weeks in the season, so we knew that they would be a tough test for us."

"I thought we did a great job, especially in that second half, of getting our shots and being very efficient with our shooting," Peluso continued. "We obviously loved the second-half production from Jack Savarese, Brendan Sullivan, Tyler Ryan and Michael Burns."

First-year Cooper Foote earned the win between the pipes for the Ducks, collecting six saves in his first collegiate start. Fellow first-year netminder Justin Gold spelled Foote for the last five-plus minutes of the contest and made one save to close out the victory. Luke Mignoli had 12 saves and Jordan Berson, who came on in relief of Mignoli in the fourth quarter snagged one in the loss for Oneonta.

The Red Dragons got on the board first in this one on a power play, as Cannon found the back of the net midway through the opening period. The Ducks responded with two unanswered goals in the first by Ryan and Saverese, with Savarese's tally coming 37 seconds after Ryan's after sophomore Conner Park's faceoff win that allowed the Ducks to maintain possession.

"I thought Conner Park competed at the faceoff dot and did a great job there," Peluso shared.

The Red Dragon's defense continued to keep the game close as each side scored three times in the second quarter, resulting in a 5-4 scoreboard at the end of the first half.

Luke Maslin found the back of the net with five minutes left in the third to snap the Ducks' scoring run, but the Ducks scored the final five goals of the game to provide the final margin.

Stevens finished with a massive 49-23 edge in shots. Of the Ducks' 49 shots, 31 were on goal, while Oneonta registered 12. Savarese had a game-high 12 shots, including six on target, while Sullivan had nine followed by eight a-piece from Burns and Caplis. Connor Gallagher led the Red Dragons with five shots, of which only one was on-goal.

Stevens forced 31 turnovers while Oneonta caused 16 miscues for the Ducks. Junior David Bendis led the way for Stevens causing three turnovers, while Ryan, junior Joe Cawley, and graduate student Sean Scadden all caused two. Jack Mueller created two turnovers to lead the way for Oneonta.

"I love the game played by Joe Cawley and David Bendis on the back end to really limit Oneonta's shooting," Peluso offered. "Now we prepare for the No. 1 team in the country."

The teams were pretty much evenly matched in the faceoff circle with Oneonta holding a slim 14-12 edge. Sophomore Conner Park accounted for seven of Stevens' 12 wins, while sophomore Russell Eberding achieved the remaining five. Timothy Shanley collected 11 for Oneonta, while Stephen Sommo won three.

The hometown Ducks held a 45-38 edge in ground balls. Ryan, Scadden, and junior Jake Wright each picked up four, while Cawley, Sullivan, senior Tom Conway, and junior Joseph DeGuida tallied three. Bryce Caffrey led Oneonta with five.

Stevens went 1 for 2 on extra-man opportunities, while the Red Dragons found success once in three tries.

Stevens was 26 for 28 on its clearing attempts. Oneonta finished 15 of 24. The Ducks bookended a perfect 8 for 8 and 6 for 6 performance in the first and last quarters.

First-years Larson Cronk, Patrick McKee and Andrew Muller all made their collegiate debuts in the second half.

Up Next: No. 20 Men's Lacrosse continues their challenging non-conference schedule on Mar. 9 as they remain at the friendly confines of DeBaun Athletic Complex to face No. 1 Rochester Institute of Technology. The teams last met in 2018 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament with RIT leading the all-time series 7-1.
