Men’s Tennis Opens Maryland Trip with a Resounding 8-1 Victory over Salisbury

Four Ducks sweep their singles matches as Men's Tennis earns victory

SALISBURY, Md. (March 5, 2022)  The Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team swept the three doubles flights en route to an 8-1 victory over Salisbury University Saturday in a non-conference tilt at the Salisbury Tennis Center.

Graduate student Keegan Morris picked up a hard-fought three-set win (6-2, 3-6, 6-3) at first singles as the Ducks also claimed five of the six singles flights in earning their first victory of the 2022 campaign, moving their record to 1-3. Luke McMullen had the lone Salisbury win at fifth singles as the Sea Gulls slipped to 3-2. The victory avenged a 6-3 setback to Salisbury in 2020 in the last meeting between the teams.

"The energy and focus we came out with today in doubles was contagious and set the tone for the rest of the match" remarked head coach Steve Gachko. "I'm proud of how our guys competed today and we continue to make improvements each match."

As coach Gachko highlighted, Stevens earned a clean sweep at doubles on the day as Morris and first-year Olof Persson were victorious 8-4 in line one. Meanwhile senior Marc Feliu and first-year Troy Zhang won a tight 8-6 match in the second flight and first-year Sebastian Wroe and sophomore Aashi Kulakarni cruised to an 8-3 result in favor of the Ducks in the third flight to complete the sweep.

Flights two through four were dominant wins for the Stevens as Feliu won his match against Russell Willenborg 6-4, 6-3. Kulakami was more of a dominant sweep as he took home a 6-1, 6-2 result versus Gianluca Beaujon. At fourth singles first-year Vivek Harinarayan enjoyed a crisp 6-1, 6-3 victory over Christopher Catan.

Luke McMullen was the lone victory of the day for the Sea Gulls with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 win over first-year Matt Luzzi on line five.

Not to be outdone, Wroe took care of his singles match at sixth singles in 6-3, 6-3 fashion against Gavin Reagle.

Up Next: Men's Tennis will continue their Maryland weekend when they take on Washington College tomorrow, Sunday Mar. 6. The Ducks have only competed against the Shoreman once before, coming away with a 6-3 victory back in 2016.
