Baseball Wins Big at Home Against CCNY

The Ducks won 12-1 in the non-conference matchup

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 19, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team earned a 12-1 win at home over the City College of New York in a non-conference matchup, Tuesday, April 19. First-year Evan Pravato and first-year Kevin Villares led the Ducks with three hits each and Pravato had a career-high five stolen bases.

Junior Ben Tobio went 2 for 4 and led Stevens with three RBI and graduate student Thomas Paulich also went 2 for 4 and had two RBI. The Ducks improved to 24-10 overall with the win and have won nine out of ten games all-time against CCNY.

First-year Tyler DiBlasi led the Beavers, going 2 for 4 with an RBI. CCNY fell to 3-20 overall and have now lost seven-straight.

First-year Joseph Gonzalez (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings and struck out five in a relief effort and earned the victory for the Ducks. Junior Mark DeCicco got the start and pitched four innings, giving up only one earned run and striking out five.

The game started slowly for Stevens. They took an early lead in the first inning and then CCNY scored their only run of the game to tie it 1-1 at the top of the third. The Ducks woke up after that and scored four runs in the bottom of the third. Tobio and senior Ryan Wall each had RBI doubles to give Stevens a 5-1 lead.

It was smooth sailing after that. The Ducks added two runs in the fourth, two in the sixth and three in the eighth to make the score 12-1. Sophomore Axel Johnson pitched the seventh and eighth innings, striking out a season-high five batters and first-year Matt Villapiano pitched the final inning to close out the game.

"Great to see Kevin Villares earn his first start and have a multiple hit night. There aren't many things he doesn't do well on the baseball field. Our pitching was a highlight tonight. With Mark DeCicco giving us four decent innings. Joe Gonzalez, Axel Johnson and Matt Villapiano were all outstanding in relief," said head coach Kristaps Aldins. "Now it's time to move on and prepare for a big series against Misericordia. If you can't get up for that type of series, I don't know what to say."

Up Next: Stevens host Misericordia on Friday, April 22, in a big MAC Freedom matchup. The game is set to start at 3 p.m. on Dobbelaar Field.
