Women’s Lacrosse Downs Wilkes; Inches Closer to Postseason Berth

Rogers totals nine points as Ducks pick up decisive win

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (April 23, 2022)  – Senior Camryn Rogers matched a career high with nine points as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team defeated Wilkes University 20-5 Saturday in a MAC Freedom matchup at Schmidt Stadium.

Junior Zoe Cook scored four times and first-year Emily Smart finished with a goal and two assists for the Ducks, who improved to 13-2 on the year and to 5-1 in league play. Stevens sits in second place in the league standings and can clinch a spot in the MAC Freedom tournament with a victory Wednesday over Arcadia. The Ducks' 13 victories set a new single-season high for head coach Karen Shaddock

Five different players found the back of the net and Domenica Lerch had two assists for the Colonels, who dropped to 3-11 on the year and to 1-6 in league play. 

Seniors Natalie Fitzpatrick and Morgan Westerby, along with first-year Alison Lax each scored twice for the Ducks, who saw 11 different players finish with at least one point. Sophomore Emily Leiby had a goal and an assist and junior Maddie Schmidt and first-year Rebecca Guerra each added one. Senior Maeve McGovern and junior Julieann Murphy each dished out an assist to round out the Ducks' scoring.

Senior Lauren Cunniff made four saves in the cage for the Ducks to earn the victory. First-year Erica Strojny took over in the fourth quarter. Samantha Scott made three saves in defeat for Wilkes. Ashley Coughlin relieved Scott at halftime and made one save.

Stevens raced out to an early lead, scoring four times in the first five minutes of the opening quarter. Rogers led the way, putting four shots past Scott in helping the Ducks' open a 10-2. Rogers finished with six goals to mark her 11th hat trick of the year, while also dishing out three assists. The six-goal outing is Rogers' fourth with six or more markers.

Rogers and Fitzpatrick scored in the early moments of the second quarter and tallies from Cook and Fitzpatrick sent the Ducks into halftime with a 14-3 advantage. The Ducks scored five times in the third quarter and added one more in the fourth to provide the final 20-5 margin.

The Ducks were highly efficient from eight meters, scoring on five of their six free-position attempts. Cook finished 2 for 2, while Fitzpatrick and Lax each went 1 for 1. Stevens also converted three of its five power-play opportunities, with Fitzpatrick, Lax and Guerra finding the back of the net on the woman-advantage.

Stevens forced three of the Colonels' 20 turnovers. Murphy and seniors Josie Cook and Meredith Conlin each registered one caused turnover. 

Westerby was a force on the draw for the Ducks, earning a career-best 11 draw controls, helping Stevens to a 22-7 advantage on the day. Rogers earned five, while Zoe Cook, Leiby and Fitzpatrick each had two to round out the Ducks' efforts in the circle. Lerch, Laura Bayzick and Caitlin McDonough each had two to pace Wilkes.

The Ducks picked up 17 ground balls, and finished with a 17-14 edge in the statistic. Josie Cook picked up a career-best five, while Cunniff added four.
