DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (April 27, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team swept MAC Freedom opponent Delaware Valley on the road on Wednesday, April 27. They took game one 14-0 and game two by a score of 5-4.
First-year
Kaitlin Smith (7-7) pitched a complete game shutout in the opener. She gave up just one hit and struck out six batters. She also earned the win in game two, coming in in relief. Junior
Alex Schoellig led the team with four hits and four RBI. The Ducks improved to 12-16 overall and 8-6 in conference play.
First-year Yasmine Gonzalez was the only player to have a hit in both games for Delaware Valley. She had a total of two hits and an RBI. First-year Carly Mahal and senior Caitlyn Pollock also had two hits. The Aggies fell to 10-25 overall and 3-11 in conference play.
The Ducks took a big early lead in the first inning of game one. Senior
Meg Halloran advanced home on a walk for the first run of the game and then junior
Alex Schoellig picked up two RBI single up the middle and they led 3-0. Stevens scored once more on a bases loaded walk and then sophomore
Julia Baber drove in two runs on a single through the left side to make the score 6-0.
Stevens added one more run in the third and then the bats exploded in the fifth for seven more runs to make the score 14-0. Five different Ducks added RBIs in the fifth inning, including Halloran and Schoellig who each had two. Schoellig finished game one with season highs in hits and RBIs, going 4 for 4 with four RBI.
Game two was tied through the first three innings. Stevens had a 3-1 lead through two and a half innings thanks to a two RBI double from graduate student
Amanda Delorme and first-year
Rachael Prescott. The Aggies tied the game with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third and then took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
The Ducks began to battle back in the fifth. Prescott picked up her second RBI of the day to score senior
Lexi Gregule and then junior
Elise Fauske scored the game-winning run after an error by Delaware Valley in the sixth to make the score 5-4.
Pollock (0-4) received the loss in game one for the Aggies and senior Olivia Monismith (7-14) received the loss in game two.
Up Next: Stevens has a quick turnaround and is back on the road tomorrow, Thursday, April 28, against William Paterson. The non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
