Amanda Delorme scampered home on senior
Meg Halloran's grounder to give the Stevens Institute of Technology softball team an 8-7 extra-inning walk-off victory to split a non-conference doubleheader with Manhattanville College Tuesday at Waterfront Park.
Sophomore
Julia Baber homered and three hits on the day and fellow second-year
Carolyn Yahn had two in the nightcap for the Ducks, who closed the day with a 6-10 record. Jayleen Torres had four hits on the day for Manhattanville, who finished the day 10-12. The Ducks' extra-inning win was the program's first in four all-time meetings with the softball power.
"Today we made everything more difficult for ourselves" commented head coach
Emily Kaczmarek. "Too many highs and lows in every facet of the game. We're fortunate to have walked away with a win."
The Ducks retired the Valiants in order in the top half of the eighth, stranding Olivia Fasce at second, the Ducks quickly struck in their half of the inning. Delorme was placed at second and moved to third on junior
Alex Schoellig's sacrifice bunt. After fouling off Emily Mottoshiski's first offering, Halloran grounded to short. After initially being looked back to third, Delorme broke towards home and slid home to spark a celebration. Stevens walked-off King's in extra innings in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Junior
Erin Kreis (3-5) gave up an unearned run over 2 2-3 innings to earn the victory in game two. The right-hander suffered the loss in the opener.
Baber stuffed the box score across the two games, going 3 for 6 with a homer, a double, and four RBI, while also reaching base via a hit by pitch. Yahn went 2 for 4 in game two with a run scored. Delorme finished 3 for 6 with two runs scored and a double.
The Ducks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Fifth-year
Siobhan Cottell led off with a single and Yahn singled to right, moving Cottell to third. First-year
Rachael Prescott ripped a double to left to give the Ducks an early lead.
The Valiants evened things up in third against first-year
Kaitlin Smith. Giovanna Liggett had a two-run single and Mottoshiski added an RBI single.
Stevens' offense got going in the of the fourth. After a Prescott walk, Delorme singled to left to put runners on first and third. A fielder's choice knotted the score the rally continued when Halloran reached on a bunt single to third. Baber was up next and had the biggest hit of the inning when she singled through the right side to bring home two runs making it 5-3 Ducks.
Manhattanville jumped back in front in the sixth, scoring three runs to take a 6-5 lead and Mottoshiski added an RBI single one single later to take a 7-6 lead into the Ducks' final half-inning.
The Ducks forced extra innings with a two-out rally in the seventh. Yahn began the rally with an infield single. Pinch-runner junior
Elise Fauske moved to second on a wild pitch, which ended up being a critical development. With the Ducks still down to their last out, they benefited from a Valiants fielding miscue allowing Fauske to score all the way from second.
In the opener, the Valiants scored five times in the third off Kreis to take a commanding lead. Liggett delivered the big blow with a grand slam to center. Samantha Harker added a solo blast two batters later to provide all the cushion Charli Shinstine needed. Shinstine allowed an earned run on two hits and struck out 10 to post a complete-game victory. Baber struck for the Ducks' first hit of the game in the sixth with a long homer to left. The Ducks added a run in the seventh when pinch-runner
Emily McGuire came around to score when the Valiants' right fielder misplayed Delorme's double.
Smith fired four innings of relief in the opener and spun 5 1-3 innings as the game two starter.
Up Next: Softball returns to MAC Freedom play when they travel to DeSales University on Apr. 9 for a doubleheader against the Bulldogs. The Ducks own a 4-2 lead in the all-time series and swept DeSales last year in 2021 by the scores of 5-1 and 3-0.
