LEXINGTON Va. (May 13, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team defeated Drew by a score of 5-2 on Friday, May 13, in an NCAA Tournament matchup hosted by Washington and Lee University. It was the team's first NCAA Tournament win since 2019.
With the win, the Ducks improved to 12-4 on the season and Drew falls to 12-9.
The Ducks trailed 2-1 early in the match after doubles play. Senior
Alexis Fuda and first-year
Isabella Dona picked up the team's lone win by a score of 8-4 in the second. The other two doubles matches were battles. Senior
Agatha Malinowski and junior
Audrey Heaberlin fell 8-7 from the first position and sophomore
Polina Odintseva paired with junior
Juliette Marchisio lost 8-7 (12-10) at third.
Stevens began to mount a comeback in singles action. Odintseva tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-3, 6-0 win from the fourth position. Malinowski followed that up with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at first and the Ducks took back the lead in the match. They closed out the match with two big three set victories. Heaberlin won 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-0 at second singles and Fuda closed out the match from the third spot with a 0-6, 7-5, 6-2 win.
