Moving On! Women’s Track & Field’s Mathews Advances to 100 Hurdles Championship Race

Mathews wins heat, ranks third overall heading into Saturday's championship race

GENEVA, Ohio (May 27, 2022)  – Junior Laura Mathews of the Stevens Institute of Technology women's track and field team will race for a national championship for the second time in her career after winning her preliminary 100-meter hurdle heat Friday at the 2022 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships. 

Entering the day with a seed time of 13.82 seconds, Mathews ran into a head wind and won her preliminary race with a time of 14.16 seconds to advance to Saturday's final, where she will be seeded third. Gustavus Adolphus' Birgen Nelson will hold the top seed after winning her preliminary heat in 13.72 seconds. North Central's Julia Babinec was the winner of the second heat and will be seeded second in the championship final.

Already the first hurdler in program history to earn All-America recognition, Mathews, who holds both the school and Middle Atlantic Conference record in the event, will aim to collect the second national accolade of at 12:50 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. The Denville, New Jersey native finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles at March's Indoor National Championships.
