WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (May 8, 2022) – The fourth-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology softball team defeated No. 2 Arcadia by a score of 7-3 to in the MAC Freedom Championship, Sunday, May 8, at Weehawken Waterfront Park. It was the team's second-straight conference title.
Fifth-year
Siobhan Cottell went 2 for 4, hit a game-clinching three run homer in the third inning and was named the MAC Freedom Championship Most Valuable Player. Graduate student
Amanda Delorme and senior
Meg Halloran also had two hits and junior
Erin Kreis (9-9) got the win, pitching six and two thirds' innings and giving up just one run. The Ducks improved to 18-17 on the season with the win.
Arcadia jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first. Junior Megan Sooy hit a two-run home run on first-year
Kaitlin Smith. After the home run, Kreis entered the game in relief and Stevens got out of the first trailing 2-0. After a scoreless second inning, Cottell came up to bat in the top of the third and sent a ball deep to center field and over the wall to give the Ducks a 3-2 lead through three.
Stevens scored four more runs in the sixth to add to their lead. Senior
Lexi Gregule brought in a run on a bunt single to start the inning. Delorme followed that up with an RBI single through the right side and sophomore
Julia Baber and Halloran also drove in runs to give their team a 7-2 lead headed into the final inning.
Arcadia scored one run on a bases loaded walk to make the score 7-3 in the bottom of the seventh and then Kreis closed out the game with the bases loaded to earn Stevens the MAC Freedom title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Sophomore Juliana Presto (21-4) pitched a complete game and received the loss for the Knights.
Up Next: Stevens will play in the NCAA Tournament. The selection show is scheduled for tomorrow, Monday, May 9, to determine their next opponent. The show is scheduled for 1 p.m.
