HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 11, 2022) – Sophomore
Luca Campbell pounced on a loose ball and drove it into the back of the net in the 81st minute to send No. 25 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer over Springfield College 1-0 Sunday in a non-conference match at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Sophomore
Emerico Vespucci began the winning play, driving a left-footed shot from just beyond the top of the 18-yard box. Springfield's Clayton Knibbs dove slightly to his left and pushed the scoring try aside. As the ball was trickling through the six-yard box, Campbell, who ran through the box unmarked, deftly touched the ball into the right side of the goal for his third goal of the year. Campbell's tally was his third of the year and second in as many matches. Vespucci was credited with an assist.
The victory was the fourth straight for the Ducks, who improved to 4-0-1.
Knibbs made nine saves for Springfield, who dropped to 1-2-1. Stevens has won the last four meetings between the programs.
First-year goalkeeper
Anthony Troyan made his collegiate debut and stopped five shots to earn both the victory and his first career clean sheet..
On a sloshy night in Hoboken, the teams engaged in a positional battle throughout the match. Springfield finished with an 8-5 advantage in shots over the opening 45 minutes, but Stevens reversed in the second half, outshooting the Pride 11-4.
Troyan was tested early in the match. Springfield's Koul Majok sent a nifty header on frame in the 11th minute, which the Colonia, New Jersey native snatched from the air. Troyan turned aside another Majok try two minutes later to keep the score even.
Prior to the match, both teams observed a moment of silent tribute to commemorate the anniversary of the events of Sept. 11, 2001.
Unsung Heroes
The Ducks' defensive group spun their third clean sheet of the season. The Ducks have conceded just two goals over their first five matches and lead the conference with an opposing scoring average of .40 goals per match.
