Women’s Volleyball Sweeps FDU-Florham for Sixth Straight Win

Patterson records team-high 11 kills, Ducks move to 4-0 in MAC Freedom play

MADISON, N.J. (September 27, 2022)  – Junior Liz Patterson had a match-high 11 kills to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team to a sweep of FDU-Florham (28-26, 15-15, 25-17) in a MAC Freedom matchup at the Ferguson Recreation Center.

Junior Meg Dion added eight kills and a solo block for the Ducks, who won their sixth straight match in improving to 13-4 on the season and to a perfect 4-0 in the MAC Freedom. Since 2019, the Ducks are 18-1 in league contests.

Charlotte Fruscione had a team-high eight kills and Gabbie Hart had three blocks to lead FDU-Florham, who dropped its third straight to fall to 3-6 on the year and to 1-3 in conference action. Stevens has won the last seven meetings between the programs, including sweeps in four of the last five matches.

The opening set provided the tightest action between the teams - with 13 lead changes and 12 ties. The Ducks, who scored first in all three sets, took advantage of FDU errors to collect their first three points. First-year Vivian Lisboa set down a set from senior Enkhsanaa Enkhbayar for the Ducks' first kill of the night.

Neither side was able to create separation from the other throughout the back-and-forth opening set. The Ducks' largest lead was three and the Devils' greatest advantage was five at 23-18, before Stevens rallied with five straight points - the longest run of either side in the opening set - to draw even at 23. The see-saw battle continued until sophomore Cleo Shannon knocked down a set from first-year Gabbi Roberts and Dion blocked Hart's attack to give the Ducks the opening set.

The Ducks would seize control of the second set from the opening serve. Enkhbayar fed Shannon, who sliced one through the FDU block for the first point of the frame. Sophomore Bailey Axelrad served an ace and Lisboa set down an Enkhbayar pass as the Ducks opened an early three-point lead.

FDU trimmed the Ducks' lead to a single point and then tied the score on a Hart ace, but the crafty Ducks continued to pressure the FDU defense. Lisboa partnered with senior Ava Smithing for a block and Axelrad served up another ace as the Ducks reclaimed a four-point lead. The Ducks would hold a comfortable margin until a 7-0 run broke the set open and clinched the second set.

After scoring the final seven points of the second set, the Ducks continued rolling as the scoreboard turned to the third. Stevens would score the first six points of the frame to extend its scoring streak to 13, which bridged the second and third set.

Adrienne DeFuria knocked down a pass from Kacie Ros for FDU's first point of the frame, but an error, an ace and a Lisboa kill pushed the Ducks' lead to 10-2. The Devils would close within four, but five unanswered points pushed the Ducks' lead to 20-11 and another Patterson kill closed out the match.

Inside the Numbers
  • After trailing 25-24 in the opening set, the Ducks would not trail the rest of the match.
  • The Ducks' hit .312 (15-5-32) in the final set - the highest number in any set by either team.
  • Stevens served up 13 aces against only three for FDU. The Ducks have reached double figures in aces seven times this season.
  • Axelrad finished with three aces and a match-high 19 digs. Patterson finished with nine digs, falling one dig shy of a double-double.
  • Axelrad and Patterson combined for 40 receptions with just two errors.
  • Lisboa finished with six kills for the third time this season.
  • Seven different players had at least one kill.

Unsung Hero
