Women's Soccer Falls to Widener on the Road

Dana Perry made a career-high seven saves in the loss

CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 28, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team was defeated by Widener on the road by a score of 2-0 on Wednesday night. Junior goalkeeper Dana Perry made a career-high seven saves in the loss.
 
Both teams generated an impressive offensive attack in the first half. The Ducks fired 12 shots in the opening 45 minutes and the Pride had nine. Widener goalkeeper Samantha Coon made fives save in the first and Perry made six. Despite the high volume of offense from Stevens, it was the Pride who broke through first. In the 39th minute, Niamh Sweeney found the back of the net to give her team the 1-0 lead. The Ducks were unable to equalize in before the break and trailed 1-0 at halftime.
 
Stevens continued to put pressure on the Widener defense in the second half. They generated ten shots in the final 45 minutes and placed four of those shots on goal. The Ducks also out earned the Pride in corners by a total of 5 to 1. Widener was unable to match their offensive output from the first half and placed just two shots on goal, but they made their opportunities count, scoring their second goal of the game in the 49th minute to extend their lead to two. Despite the impressive effort from Stevens, they were unable to mount a comeback and fell by a score of 2-0.
 
The Ducks fell to 1-5-3 on the season with the loss and Widener improved to 4-3-2.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens led in shots by a total of 22 to 12 and the two sides were tied in shots on goals with nine apiece.
  • The Ducks earned eight corner kicks to the Prides two.
  • It was Stevens' first loss to Widener since 2002.
