Field Hockey Defeats Albright in Home Opener

Emily Smart scored twice in the team's 4-2 victory

HOBOKEN, N.J. (Sept. 7, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team defeated Albright College at home in a non-conference matchup, Wednesday evening by a score of 4-2. The Ducks never trailed in the game and sophomore Emily Smart scored twice, including the game winner.

Stevens came out strong to start the game. In the first quarter, the Ducks outshot the Lions 9 to 0 and led in penalty corners 4 to 0. Their relentless pressure finally gave way to a goal in the final second of the quarter. Sophomore Makenna Quigley received a pass from sophomore Sarah Korczukowski after a penalty corner and buried it in the back of the net with 1.4 seconds remaining on the clock. It was Quigley's first goal of the season.

Albright began to fight back in the second. They were even with the Ducks in shots in the 15-minute period at 4 to 4 and earned three penalty corners to Stevens' three. Fifth-year goalkeeper Emily Franco made three saves in the second. The Lions finally evened the score with 29 seconds left in the half. Chelsea Johnson scored to tie the game at 1-1 headed into halftime.

The third quarter belonged to Stevens as the Ducks found the back of the net three times to pull away from Albright. Smart scored just 30 seconds into the third and Korczukowski assisted for the second time in the game. Six minutes later, first-year Gabi Maroney scored an impressive goal as she streaked down the right side of the field past several Albright defenders and finally found the back of the net. The Lions responded just over a minute later to cut the score to 3-2 and it was once again Johnson who scored for Albright. Smart scored her second of the game and the team's third goal of the quarter late in the third to extend the team's lead to 4-2 and put the game away for the Ducks. Junior Dani Hessels assisted on the play.

Despite a strong push from Albright in the final 15 minutes, they were unable to score another goal and the game ended with a score of 4-2. Stevens improved to 3-1 with the win and the Lions fell to 0-3.
