Men's Soccer Downs Rutgers-Newark on the Road

The Ducks score two second half goals to earn a 2-1 win

NEWARK, N.J. (Sept. 7, 2022) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team defeated Rutgers University-Newark by a score of 2-1 in a non-conference matchup, Wednesday evening. Graduate student Sean Masur scored the game-winning goal for the Ducks in the second half.

The game started slowly as neither side was able to break through. The Ducks put three shots on goal but were unable to put any past Scarlet Raiders goalkeeper Christian Andrach and the two sides were knotted at 0-0 through 45 minutes of play.

Stevens finally broke through in the 54th minute. Graduate student Adam Silva fired a shot from outside the box that just cleared the head of the goalkeeper and found its way into the back of the net. Senior Bruno Andino was credited with the assist. Ten minutes later, Masur added some insurance for the Ducks. He picked up a loose ball in the box off a corner kick from junior Fritz Kabeiseman and slotted it into the back of the net to give Stevens a 2-0 advantage.

Rutgers-Newark began to push late in the game and senior goalkeeper Justin Cross was up to the task, making key saves in the final 20 minutes of the game. He had three saves total in the half. The Scarlet Raiders finally broke through in the 81st minute but it was too little too late and Stevens earned a 2-1 victory to improve to 2-0-1 on the season. The Scarlet Raiders fell to 1-2 with the loss.
