WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (January 15, 2023) – Graduate student
Jess Broad had a game-high 28 points to lead No. 17 Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball over Lycoming College 83-55 Sunday in a MAC Freedom matchup at Lamade Gymnasium.
Junior
Elissa Nsenkyire continued her offensive breakout with 16 points and four assists for the Ducks, who won their fifth straight to improve to 14-2 on the year and to a perfect 7-0 in the MAC Freedom. Through 16 games, the Ducks continue to match the program's best stretch since the 2014-15 season.
Kami Abdo was one of three Warriors to finish with nine points and Emily Lockard snagged seven rebounds for Lycoming, who dropped to 5-11 on the year and to 1-6 in conference play. Lycoming has dropped two straight and has lost all four all-time meetings with Stevens.
For the second straight game, Broad paced the Stevens offense. The Morganville, New Jersey native made 14 of her 19 attempts from the floor to total 28 points to finish four points shy of matching a career high. Interestingly, Broad scored her 28 points without attempting either a 3-pointer or a free throw. The offensive outburst moved Broad to 1,365 career points.. She needs to average 15 points across her next nine games to become just the fourth player in program history to record 1,500 career points.
The Ducks' longest scoring run of the contest took place in the decisive third quarter. Holding a 10-point lead, the Ducks scored the final nine points of the frame to essentially put the game out of reach. Broad keyed the run with a short jumper, which she followed with a transition basket off a long rebound corralled by first-year
Leyla Castro. Broad then stripped Mya Wetzel which led to a fast-break layup and a three-point play for senior
Danielle Cornetta. First-year
Dorothy Loffredo closed out the stretch with a short jumper that just beat the buzzer to push the Ducks' lead to 61-42.
The Ducks built their early lead by shooting a blistering 10 for 16 (62.5%) from the floor in the first quarter. Broad was dominant in the opening quarter, sinking 6 of her 7 shots to nearly match Lycoming's team output. 12 of the Ducks' 20 points in the first quarter came in the paint and three Ducks: graduate student
Amber Porrett, Loffredo and classmate
Olivia Schubiger were perfect from the floor.
After Lycoming shot 50% from the floor in the opening quarter, including 3 for 5 from behind the arc, the Ducks clamped down defensively in the second quarter. Lycoming went 5 for 17 in the second and turned the ball over four times. Over the final three quarters, the Ducks held the Warriors to just 33% shooting from the floor, including 23% from 3-point range.
Pivotal Point
- After Lycoming scored the first basket of the game on a 3-pointer by Wetzel, Broad scored three straight baskets to give Stevens a 12-8 lead, one which they'd hold across the remainder of the game.

- Each team pulled down 31 rebounds. Porrett snagged eight to lead both teams and continues to lead the MAC Freedom with 8.8 boards per game.
