DALLAS, Pa. (January 21, 2023) – Senior
Danielle Cornetta had 14 points, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team fell to Misericordia University 57-52 Saturday in a MAC Freedom matchup at the Anderson Center.
Graduate student
Jess Broad finished with a team-high 15 points and junior
Elissa Nsenkyire added 12 for the Ducks, who saw their six-game winning streak come to an end in falling to 15-3 on the year and to 8-1 in conference play. Stevens and Misericordia have split the last four meetings.
Alyssa Bondi had a game-high 26 points and Meaghan McCaffrey came off the bench with nine to lead Misericordia, who won its fourth straight to improve to 13-5 on the year and to 6-3 in the MAC Freedom.
The game was ultimately decided by the third quarter, where Misericordia scored the first 13 points of the frame to erase a six-point Stevens lead. The Cougars would take their first lead since midway through the first quarter on a driving layup by Bondi to jump in front 29-28. Another Bondi basket pushed the lead to seven before a fast-break jumper by Cornetta finally ended Misericordia's run.
The Ducks built their halftime lead with a strong defensive effort, holding Misericordia to just 23% shooting in the first half (8 for 35), including 1 for 14 (7%) from behind the arc. The Ducks set an early defensive tone, forcing a shot clock violation on the Cougars' first possession of the game and Nsenlyire followed that by blocking a jumper by Morgan Haeffle on Misericordia's next possession.
Conversely, the Ducks shot 6 for 10 in the opening quarter, with Nsenkyire opening the game's scoring with a long three and eight of the Ducks' 14 first-quarter points coming in the paint. The Ducks would use a 7-0 run to jump in front by five with points during the stretch coming from four different players.
Pivotal Point
- After trimming a 10-point deficit to four with just over three minutes left in the contest, the Ducks had a chance to further cut into Misericordia's lead after a block from graduate student Amber Porrett.
- However, Broad's short jumper rimmed out and McCaffrey would score her final points of the game on the Cougars' next possession to push the lead back to six.
