Balanced Attack Sends No. 22 Women’s Basketball Over King’s

12 players score as Ducks move to 5-0 in conference play

HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 7, 2023)  –Twelve different players scored as No. 22 Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball led wire-to-wire in a 64-41 victory over King's College Saturday in a MAC Freedom matchup at Canavan Arena.

Senior Danielle Cornetta, sophomore Lucy Alberici and first-year Olivia Schubiger each had nine points for the Ducks, who won their third straight in improving to 12-2 on the year and to 5-0 in league play.

Brenna Costello came off the bench and finished two rebounds shy of a double-double with a game-high 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds to lead King's, who fell to 2-12 on the year and to 1-5 in the MAC Freedom. The Monarchs have dropped 11 of their last 12 games and have dropped each of the last five meetings with the Ducks.

For the second straight game, the Ducks built a significant lead in the opening quarter. Stevens shot more than 50% (10 of 19) from the floor in the first quarter and totaled 27 points, marking the most points in the first quarter this season by the Ducks and tied for the second-highest total in any single quarter this season. While the Ducks were certainly clicking offensively, they also put the clamps on King's' offense, forcing the Monarchs into 1 for 11 shooting (and 0 for 4 from behind the arc), while also forcing 12 turnovers.

The Ducks scored the first six points of the game, punctuated by a fast-break layup by junior Elissa Nsenkyire that was keyed by a lengthy pass from first-year Leyla Castro. Castro finished with three assists and Nsenkyire totaled five points. After allowing the Monarchs' first basket on a layup by Lauren Casey, Stevens went on an 11-0 run to take control of the contest. Graduate student Amber Porrett began the stretch with a layup after classmate Jess Broad found her open under the basket. Broad collected four of her eight points during the stretch that saw four different players score.

The Ducks continued to keep King's in check, holding the Monarchs to single digits in each of the first three quarters and to just 25% shooting for the game (a number that was boosted by a 6 for 15 (40%) performance in the fourth quarter). The Ducks would go on to open as much as a 32-point lead in the fourth quarter before the Monarchs went on a 6-0 run to cut into Stevens' advantage.

Eleven different players finished with at least one field goal and four players scored from the line. Seven players finished with at least two baskets. The Ducks finished with seven threes and went 7 for 9 from the line.
