Field Hockey Clinches Home Playoff Game with 8-1 win over FDU-Florham

Ducks match program record with 11-game winning streak

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 25, 2023) – Junior Sarah Korczukowski and first-year Sophia Cozza each scored twice as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team defeated FDU-Florham 8-1 Wednesday evening on a picture-perfect fall night at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Juniors Makenna Quigley and Emily Smart joined first-year Jess Kopernick in also producing multi-point nights for the Ducks, who won their 11th straight game to match a program record for consecutive victories. The win, which improved Stevens' record to 14-2 on the year and to a perfect 6-0 in the MAC Freedom, clinched a home playoff game in the semifinal round of the MAC Freedom Tournament. The Ducks can clinch their second MAC Freedom regular season title Saturday with a victory at DeSales, who also remained perfect in conference play with an 8-1 victory over Delaware Valley.

Dominique Rodriguez had the lone marker for FDU-Florham, who dropped its fourth straight to fall to 4-11 on the year and to 1-5 in conference action. One of the more frequent opponents in program history, Stevens holds a 16-4 edge in the all-time series and has won all four meetings since the sides became conference opponents in 2019.

Sophomore Lily Wierzbicki made one save in earning her 10th win in goal. The second-year netminder is second in Division III with a 0.32 goals-against average, sitting .01 behind Johnson & Wales' Sophia Brea. Wierzbicki remains on track to surpass the single-season program record, held by Stevens Athletic Hall of Famer Ellyn Griggs (0.81). Emily Prachthauser made 11 saves over three quarters in a losing effort for FDU-Florham. Adrianna Goodwin relieved Prachthauser at the start of the final period, making three saves and allowing a pair of goals.

The Rundown
  • The Ducks wasted little time getting on the board, scoring just 0 seconds into the first period. After Quigley inserted the ball on the Ducks' first penalty corner of the night, Korczukowski uncorked a shot from the top of the circle that sailed past Prachthauser into the left corner of the goal.
  • Cozza doubled the Ducks' lead less than two minutes later as the Ducks converted off another penalty corner. The first-year midfielder collected her own rebound and calmly taped the ball into the goal for her fifth of the season.
  • After taking the lead, the Ducks didn't allow FDU-Florham to get comfortable, holding the Devils without a shot until the second corner.
  • In a bit of a statistical anomaly, the Ducks scored exactly two goals in all four quarters.
  • Kopernick and sophomore Gabi Moroney scored two minutes apart in the second quarter, sending the teams into the intermission with Stevens comfortably in front. Kopernick's goal came off a nifty spin move of sorts that resulted in a clear opening to net her fourth of the season.
  • The Ducks converted another penalty corner to open scoring in the second half and would hold FDU-Florham without a second-half shot.
  • Goals from Cozza, graduate student Lynda Farinella and Korczukowski provided the final margin of victory.

Top Performers
  • Smart dished out her first three assists of the season, setting a new career high.
  • Farinella's late goal extended the South Plainfield, New Jersey native's point streak to eight.
  • Cozza and Korczukowski each totaled two goals and an assist to finish with five points.
  • Kopernick finished with a goal and an assist for her second career multi-point game.
  • First-year Lauren Flynn notched the second defensive save of her career.
  • Stevens held a decisive 18-4 edge in penalty corners and didn't concede one in the second half. The 18 corners marked the Ducks' third-highest total of the season.

For the Opponents
  • FDU-Florham totaled five shots on the evening (three on target). Rodriguez had three of the Devils' five shots.

We are starting to peak at the right moments and the determination is palpable. Our collective energy has been incredible, and this was a great way to send us into a big final weekend of regular season." – head coach Meredith Spencer-Blaetz
