Field Hockey Beats DeSales to Claim First Outright MAC Freedom Regular Season Title

The Ducks will be the #1 seed in the MAC Freedom Tournament and host #4 Arcadia.

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. (October 28, 2023) - Graduate Lynda Farinella and junior Emily Smart each tallied a goal and an assist as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team defeated DeSales 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in MAC Freedom play.

The Ducks (15-2, 7-0 MAC Freedom) have set the new program record in consecutive wins as they won their twelfth straight game on Saturday. The previous record came in 2021, when the Ducks won 11 straight. The 7-0 conference record is the best since 2013, when they also were 7-0, then being in the Empire 8 Conference. With the win, Stevens will be the #1 seed in the MAC Freedom tournament after winning the regular season title. It's their first outright regular season title as a member of the MAC Freedom. The Ducks and Misericordia were co-champions back in 2021. DeSales (8-8, 6-1 MAC Freedom) lost their first conference game of the season.

Neither team was able to score in the first quarter but each team had their chances. In the second quarter, Stevens scored just 38 seconds into the frame as Smart scored on an assist from Farinella. The Ducks tallied five shots over the next ten minutes but couldn't find another. Junior Sarah Korczukowski doubled the Ducks' advantage in the 28th minute, scoring an unassisted goal. The Ducks would lead 2-0 at the break.

After a scoreless third quarter with each team having goal-scoring chances, Farinella found the back of the goal in the fourth quarter at the 49 minute mark to give the Ducks even more breathing room. Smart returned the favor from earlier and assisted the goal. Stevens would hold on to win the crucial game and earn the top seed heading into the MAC Freedom tournament.
