Men's Soccer Defeats WPI 4-1 on PK's to Advance to Second Round of the NCAA Tournament

The Ducks will meet No. 13 Amherst in the next round.

WORCESTER, Mass. (November 11, 2023) -  Regulation was not enough Saturday afternoon as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team defeated Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) 4-1 on PK's in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The final score at the end of regulation was 1-1, with senior Fritz Kabeiseman scoring for the Ducks.

The Ducks (11-2-6) keep their season alive on penalty kicks. This is not unfamiliar territory for the Ducks, as they won two NCAA Tournament games on PK's last season. The Ducks are 4-0 in their last four penalty shootouts. The Ducks advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year and will take on No. 13 Amherst tomorrow. The Ducks have not lost since September 26th. WPI finishes the season 9-3-8.

Stevens converted all four penalties in the shootout as juniors Luca Campbell, Tomas Martini, and Emerico Vespucci, along with sophomore Ben Goldberg, each put the ball in the back of the net. WPI converted their first attempt, but graduate goalie Justin Cross made two saves after that, guessing right on both attempts, to help the Ducks advance to the next round.

The game couldn't have started any better for Stevens as Kabeiseman converted in the ninth minute to put the Ducks up 1-0. Campbell played in a free kick that found Kabeiseman, and the senior lofted the ball into the corner of the net to give the Ducks the early advantage. As the half continued, the two teams played it safe and chose not to make the big mistake, as neither team recorded a goal until late. WPI finally attempted a shot on target in the 43rd minute and scored to tie up the game. The score would remain 1-1 at the break.

The second half remained contested to start the second half. Campbell had two shots blocked in the first 12 minutes. WPI earned a spell of possession and shots between the 60th and 70th minute, but were unable to do anything with it. In the final eight minutes, Stevens had four shots but were unable to find the winning goal as the game headed into overtime. Overtime provided chances for both sides, but neither would convert as the two headed to the penalty shootout.
