SCRANTON, Pa. (November 18, 2023) - First-year Tommy Scholl tallied career-highs in points (14) and assists (5), while junior Jack Spellman 13 points and 10 rebounds, as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team defeated Scranton 85-62 Saturday afternoon.
The Ducks have now won two-straight games, improving to 2-1. Stevens improves to 1-1 all-time against Scranton. In a matchup against his former team, graduate Stephen Brunstein scored 13 points. Scranton fell to 1-3 with the loss.
Braunstein made his first basket of the game at the 16:24 mark, as he drilled a three to tie the game at five. He would hit another one on the fastbreak a few minutes later to give Stevens a 12-9 advantage. Scholl would get on the scoresheet next, as he drained a three to put Stevens up 15-11. The threes continued to fall as first-year Kyle Maddison made one to put Stevens up 26-22 with 7:34 to go. Graduate Tommy McGuire converted an and-one to put Stevens up nine with 5:43 reading on the clock. The lead would grow to as many as 11 for Stevens in the half, but the Ducks led 39-30 at the break.
Scranton cut the deficit to six out of the break to make the score 45-39. Braunstein hit another three to put Stevens back up by nine, but Scranton answered with one of their own and got it back to six. Scranton was still within six with 8:53 remaining, but the Ducks put on the pressure from there. Stevens finished the game on a 30-13 lead to close things out. It was a team effort down the stretch as multiple Ducks contributed, propelling Stevens to a 2-1 record.
