HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 29, 2023) - Graduate Stephen Braunstein tallied 29 points while making nine three-pointers, while junior Jack Spellman recorded his second career triple-double, as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team defeated St. Joseph's Long Island 90-64 Wednesday evening inside Canavan Arena.
The Ducks have now won five-straight games, improving to 5-1. The Ducks are off to the team's best start since the 2019-2020 campaign, when they went 7-0 to open up the season. Stevens improves to 7-2 all-time against the Golden Eagles, including winning the last six. St. Joseph's fell to 4-3 with the loss. Braunstein's nine three's in the game are the most for a Duck since Matt LaCorte did it in 2021 against Mount Union. The triple-double by Spellman is the first since the first of his career, which he got against New Jersey City University last season.
Braunstein kicked off his three-point party by drilling his first at the 16:52 mark which gave the Ducks an early 9-5 lead. That prompted a Golden Eagle timeout, and they responded with a 6-0 run. Down 18-16, Braunstein got free for another lead which put the Ducks back in front. Just over a minute later and the score tied, Braunstein banged home another three to put the Ducks up three. After missing on the next possession, he came back and made his fourth on the following possession. On defense, Spellman blocked one of his 11 shots that led to another Braunstein three on the offensive end. He hit another on the Ducks' next possession to give him six for the game. First-year Kyle Maddison scored the next five points for Stevens as they took a 38-28 lead. Spellman scored two more points from the line to close the half as the Ducks maintained a 48-34 lead at the break.
To kick off the second half, Spellman made a jumper and Braunstein hit yet another three as Stevens scored a quick five points. 30 seconds later, Braunstein made it eight as the gym continued to erupt as each three fell through. With the score at 56-38, Spellman made back-to-back jumpers for the Ducks to put them up 22. With 14:06 to go, Braunstein drilled his ninth three of the game to put Stevens up 67-48. The threes did not only come from Braunstein, as graduate Conor Coffey jumped into the action with 10:45 to go, putting the Ducks back up 22. Sophomore Matt Leming made one a minute-and-a-half later. First-year Harmehar Chhabra made his second triple of the season with 3:35 to go, putting Stevens in front by 26. The Ducks would close out the blowout, winning 90-64 and continuing their winning streak.
