HOBOKEN, N.J. (December 10, 2023) - Graduate student Conor Coffey scored a season-high 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team lost in overtime to Middlebury 84-77 Sunday afternoon inside Canavan Arena.
The loss ends a seven-game winning streak for the Ducks (7-2), who drop their first contest since the season opener. It was the first overtime game for Stevens this season, who went 2-0 in overtime last year. Stevens falls to 1-2 all-time against the Panthers. Middlebury improves to 5-6 on the year.
After going down 7-6 to open the game, Stevens went on a 6-0 run to take an early 12-7 lead. Graduate student Stephen Braunstein scored four of the six points on the run while Coffey added two. The Panthers followed with their own 6-0 spurt, but then Ducks scored nine-straight points to go up eight. On this run, graduate student Tommy McGuire hammered a dunk while sophomore Matt Leming buried a three. Middlebury answered that Stevens run with eight-straight of their own. With 2:20 on the clock, Braunstein hit a three that cut the Stevens deficit down to three at 29-26. First-year Xander Singh made the last bucket of the half, as Middlebury maintained a 31-28 advantage at the break.
To open the second half, the two teams kept throwing punches but neither was able to gain separation. At the 12:34 mark, first-year Kyle Maddison drilled a three-pointer to make the score 41-40 in favor of Middlebury. The Panthers then made two free throws but Sinh made a basket at the other end to get Stevens back within one. With 7:48 remaining, Middlebury went up by nine. The Ducks were able to score seven-straight points following the run, as they tied the game at 54. Sinh scored four while junior Jack Spellman made three free throws. Spellman would score the next five points for the Ducks, with three coming at the line, as Stevens led 59-58 with 2:18 to go. Stevens led 62-59 with 28 seconds to go, but Middlebury would score to get within one. Coffey then went 1-2 at the line while Middlebury would make a layup with three seconds remaining to tie things up and force overtime.
The Panthers never trailed in overtime en route to victory. They would score the first five before McGuire got the Ducks on the board to make a three point game. That was the closest Stevens would be the rest of the way, as the Panthers snuck out a 84-77 victory over the Ducks.
