WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (February 11, 2023) – Senior
Conor Coffey had a team-high 19 points but the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team fell to King's College 87-65 Saturday in a MAC Freedom matchup at Scandlon Gym.
Sophomore
Jack Spellman finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds for his eighth double-double of the year and juniors
Mike Goodall and
Alex Ratner added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Ducks, who dropped to 11-12 on the year and to 8-6 in conference play. Stevens fell to two games behind second place Lycoming, who clinched a postseason berth earlier in the day with an 85-69 victory over FDU-Florham. The Ducks, who currently reside in third place in the conference standings, are a half-game ahead of Arcadia, who were idle, and a game ahead of Misericordia, who lost to Delaware Valley. The top five teams advance to the conference playoffs, with the fourth and fifth-place teams taking to the court for a play-in game on Feb. 20.
Will Johnson had 19 points with a game-high six assists and Carmine Castiello came off the bench to add 17 for King's, who moved to 9-14 on the year and to 4-11 in the MAC Freedom. The Monarchs' victory snapped their two-game losing streak and snapped Stevens' six-game winning streak in the all-time series.
The Ducks got off to a sluggish start, scoring on just one of their first seven offensive trips down the floor. Conversely, the Monarchs used a stretch of four baskets in six possessions to take an early lead. The early offense set the tone for King's, who shot 50% from the floor in each half to secure the victory. Nearly half (12) of King's 32 baskets were from behind the arc, where the Monarchs outscored Stevens 36-15.
Stevens attempted to climb back into the game with an 8-0 run in the second half, but King's scored on three straight shots to push the lead back to 28.
Pivotal Point
- Spellman scored Stevens' first basket of the game on an offensive putback to even the score at two.
- However, King's would score the next 10 points to open a double digit lead.
Inside the Numbers
- King's held a slim 34-31 edge on the glass, including an 8-6 margin on the offensive glass.
- Despite the slim advantage in offensive rebounds, King's totaled 15 second-chance points against just five for Stevens.
- Spellman blocked two shots.
- In addition to shooting 8 for 11 from the field, Coffey dished out a team-high five assists.
Up Next
- Men's Basketball travels to DeSales on Feb. 14 for the final road game of the regular season.
