No. 19 Women’s Basketball Defeats King’s 81-43 for Fifth Straight Win

Ducks cement ninth 20-win season in program history

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (February 11, 2023) – First-year Leyla Castro and graduate student Jess Broad each had a game-high 12 points as No. 19 Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball defeated King's College of Pennsylvania 81-43 Saturday in a MAC Freedom matchup at Scandlon Gym.

Sophomore Lucy Alberici had 11 points and junior Elissa Nsenkyire added 10 for the Ducks, who won their fifth straight to improve to 20-3 on the year and to 13-1 in conference play. The Ducks crossed the 20-win plateau for the ninth time in program history and for the third time under current head coach Megan Haughey. The team's 13 league wins are the most for the program since a 14-2 mark in the Empire 8 Conference in the 2016-17 season.

The Ducks remain tied with No. 9/6 DeSales atop the MAC Freedom standings. The teams will face one another on Feb. 14 with first place on the line. The Ducks' 38-point victory locked up a home semifinal game in the MAC Freedom playoffs on February 22. The Ducks' victory, when combined with Misericordia's setback to Delaware Valley locked the Cougars into third place in the conference standings.

Caileigh Costello led King's with nine points and Kiersten Krouse added eight for the Monarchs, who dropped to 8-16 on the year and to 7-8 in the MAC Freedom. The Ducks' victory snapped the Monarchs' two-game winning streak and extended Stevens' winning streak in the all-time series to six. With the loss, King's fell into a tie with Arcadia for fourth place a half-game ahead of both Delaware Valley and Wilkes. The teams that finish fourth and fifth will play in the play-in game on Feb. 20.

The Ducks took control of the game from the opening tip on a quick 3-pointer by Alberici. Stevens scored on four of their first five possessions to take a 9-2 lead after a fast-break layup by Castro.

Stevens shot a scorching 64.3% in the first quarter (9 of 14), including a perfect 3 for 3 from behind the arc to build a 20-point lead over the opening 10 minutes. Conversely, the Ducks held King's to just 2 for 11 from the field and forced 12 turnovers that led to 14 points. Alberici did the heavy lifting in the opening period, making all four of her attempts from the floor, including two from long distance, and three of her four free throws to total nine points.

The Ducks held King's to single digits in each of the first two quarters and built a 32-point lead at halftime. The impressive defensive performance extended into the second quarter as Stevens allowed just four first-half field goals and 12 points in breaking the game open.
