Men’s Basketball Leads Wire-to-Wire in 54-43 Win Over Lycoming on Senior Day

Ducks to host tournament play-in game after wire-to-wire win

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 18, 2023) – Junior Mike Goodall finished with a game-high 21 points as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team defeated Lycoming College 54-43 Saturday in a MAC Freedom matchup at Canavan Arena.

Senior Conor Coffey and sophomore Jack Spellman each added 10 points for the Ducks, who improved to 12-13 on the year and to 9-7 in conference play. The Ducks finished tied with Arcadia in the conference standings, but by virtue of the Knight's overtime victory over DeSales, the Ducks will enter the conference tournament as the fourth seed and will host fifth-seeded Misericordia Monday in Canavan Arena in the play-in game.

Dyson Harward had eight points to lead Lycoming, who finished the regular season with a 16-9 record and an 11-5 mark in the MAC Freedom. The Ducks have won four of the five all-time meetings with Lycoming, including all three inside Canavan Arena. The Warriors enter the postseason tournament as the second seed and will host Arcadia in a semifinal matchup Wednesday evening. The Ducks' victory snapped Lycoming's four-game winning streak.

In a game that saw Lycoming outrebounded Stevens 19-7 on the offensive glass, it was a pivotal second-chance opportunity for the Ducks that proved to be a crucial point in the contest. A 6-0 run by Lycoming over a 90-second stretch saw the Warriors trim the Ducks' 13-point lead to just seven with 5:15 left in regulation. The Ducks ran their offense and first-year Brendan Coughlan missed a long three, with Coffey ending up with the loose carom. Although first-year Matt Leming missed a three of his own, the Ducks ran nearly a full minute off the clock to slow Lycoming's momentum.

The Ducks would force a pair of misses by Lycoming and Goodall sank a pair of free throws to push the lead back to nine and after a J.J. Beagle jumper, Leming connected from long range to effectively put the game out of reach. Goodall would score four of the Ducks' final five points to close out the victory. Goodall posted his fourth game with 20 or more points this season.

Lycoming was ice cold from the field in a game the Ducks led wire-to-wire. The Ducks forced Lycoming into 7 for 35 shooting in the first half, including just 1 for 11 from behind the arc. Conversely, in a must-win game, the Ducks shot nearly 50% from the floor in building an eight-point halftime lead with Goodall pacing the offense with 13 points. The third-year guard sank six of his 11 attempts from the floor over the first 20 minutes of action, while as a team, Lycoming had seven.

Prior to the game, the Ducks honored Coffey and classmates Brett Bischoping and Matt Crowley for their accomplishments and contributions to the men's basketball program.

Pivotal Point
  • A pair of free throws by Mavin James trimmed the Ducks' early lead down to just two midway through the first half.
  • Coffey found an open Goodall for the Ducks' first 3-pointer of the game to spark a 6-0 run, which forced a Lycoming timeout.
  • The Ducks maintained at least a four-point lead for the remainder of the game.

Inside the Numbers
