HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 18, 2023) – Graduate student
Amber Porrett picked a great day for her first career double-double.
Playing in the final regular season game of her career, Porrett finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds as No. 14 Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball lead wire-to-wire in a 74-55 victory over Lycoming College Saturday in a MAC Freedom matchup at Canavan Arena.
Junior
Elissa Nsenkyire had a game-high 17 points and senior
Danielle Cornetta (13) and sophomore
Lucy Alberici (11) also reached double figures for the Ducks, who improved to 21-4 on the year and to 14-2 in conference play. The Ducks 21 victories are tied for the fifth-most in program history, but are the second-most during the regular season, behind only the 2014-15 team, who went 22-3 during the regular season.
Stevens will move on to the MAC Freedom Tournament to face third-seeded Misericordia inside Canavan Arena on Feb. 22. The Cougars won their last two regular-season games, including a 102-43 victory over FDU-Florham earlier today.
Kenzie Reed and Meghan Dufner each had 10 points to pace Lycoming, who dropped its second straight game in falling to 7-18 on the year and to 3-13 in the MAC Freedom. The Ducks improved to 5-0 all-time against the Warriors.
Porrett grabbed five rebounds on both the offensive and defensive glass and shot 4 for 6 from the field and 2 for 3 from the line to cement her first career double-double. In her first season as a full-time starter, the Dumont, New Jersey native totaled 231 rebounds and led the MAC Freedom with 9.6 rebounds per game, which ranked inside the top-100 in Division III. Porrett also blocked two shots and dished out a career-high five assists and finished +21 over 32 minutes of action.
After the teams traded baskets throughout the first quarter, the Ducks finally gave themselves a little breathing room with a 9-0 run late in the frame to open a double-digit lead. First-year
Dorothy Loffredo began the run with a layup off a nifty pass by Alberici. Porrett followed with a fast-break layup, while absorbing contact to turn the basket into a 3-point play. Cornetta followed with a short jumper and first-year
Leyla Castro closed the stretch with another driving layup.
The Ducks shot a blistering 64.7% from the floor (11 of 17) in the opening quarter and although Lycoming went 5 for 11, only one of the baskets were from long range (on four attempts).
Cornetta had the first basket of the second quarter to extend the Ducks' lead to 14, while also extending the scoring run to 11. Reed finally broke through for Lycoming with a layup, but the damage was done as the Ducks held Lycoming scoreless for over five-and-a-half minutes. The Warriors went on a 7-0 run to cut into the Ducks lead, but Stevens answered with five straight points and took an 11-point lead into halftime.
Reed had the first points of the second half to trim the Ducks' advantage to nine, but Nsenkyire scored four points in 26 seconds with a pair of layups (that surrounded a Porrett steal) to push the lead back to double digits. Stevens would maintain at least a 10-point lead for the remainder of the game.
Prior to the contest, Cornetta and classmate
Kaitlyn Rothwell were honored for their accomplishments and contributions to the women's basketball program. In her first career start, Rothwell was a perfect 3 for 3 from the floor to finish with six points.
