Men’s Tennis Tripped Up by No. 18 Mary Washington 7-2

Wroe victorious in singles, the team of Kulakarni and Harinarayan win at doubles, but Ducks fall to Eagles

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (February 19, 2023) – Sophomore Sebastian Wroe earned a straight-set victory at sixth singles, but the Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis team fell to No. 18 University of Mary Washington 7-2 Sunday in a non-conference matchup on the Eagles' Indoor Courts.

Junior Aashi Kulakarni and sophomore Vivek Harinarayan posted an 8-7 victory at second doubles for the Ducks, who dropped to 1-1.

Mary Washington scored two wins in doubles play and five in the singles flights to improve to 3-0 on the year.

"Although we didn't get the start we wanted in doubles and fell short in singles play against a gritty Mary Washington squad, I was happy with several individual performances today," head coach Steve Gachko said. "Specifically, Sebastian Wroe stepped up to fill in at No. 6 singles and came up with a decisive win. Aashi and Vivek continued their strong doubles play and never let their opponents get into the match all weekend.

"We grew a lot as a team this weekend and I'm proud of the effort we had," Gachko continued. "After a much needed day off we will be ready to prepare for a battle with Haverford next weekend."

Mary Washington took a 2-1 lead through doubles play with wins on lines one and three. Kulakarni and Harinarayan scored a hard-fought 8-7 (8-1) victory over Artis Hart and Nick Spera on line two to account for the Ducks' lone doubles point.

In singles play, the hosting Eagles won five of the six flights to secure the victory. Wroe claimed the Ducks only victory in singles play with a tidy 7-5, 6-0 victory over Ryan Meyer. At No. 2 singles, Kulakarni dropped a hard-fought three-set match to Andrew Watson, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-8, while junior Andrew He dropped a spirited 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) decision to Brock Ladehoff in the third flight.

Up Next: Men's Tennis will host No. 29 Haverford College at the Edgewater Tennis Club on Feb. 25. The Ducks fell to the Fords 5-4 one season ago, but have won three of the last five matches between the programs.
