Doyle Delivers Again as Baseball Downs Rutgers-Newark 5-3

Senior delivers third straight quality start, Reyes homers, as Ducks top Scarlet Raiders

NEWARK, N.J. (February 24, 2023) – Senior Justin Doyle threw six strong innings, senior Michael Reyes homered and had three RBI, and the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team defeated Rutgers-Newark 5-3 Friday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at a brisk Weequahic Park.

Sophomore Colby Ching had an RBI single and classmate Evan Pravato singled and stole two bases for the Ducks, who improved to 4-2.

Paul Recchia tripled and scored a run and Robert Gonzalez and Connor Baksh had run-scoring singles for Rutgers-Newark, who saw its record even out at 1-1. Stevens has won each of the last four meetings and six of the last seven.

For the third straight start, Doyle (3-0) was splendid on the mound. The Louisville, Kentucky native allowed an earned run on just three hits and struck out four. Doyle has allowed one earned run in each of his starts and has a 1.47 ERA on the season.

Rutgers-Newark reached Doyle for a single run in the second. Recchia had a two-out triple to right center and came around to score on a wild pitch. Doyle settled down after the wild pitch and retired seven batters in a row before Armando Alvarez had leadoff double in the fifth. However, Doyle induced back-to-back groundouts and then struck out Jon Rosado to end the threat.

The Ducks broke through against Colin (0-1) in the fifth. Sophomore Zachary Boykin walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a wild pitch that saw Boykin score from second base, Junior Christian Kreiser walked and Reyes followed by launching Thomson's offering well over the right-field fence for his 10th career homer. Reyes later had a seeing-eye RBI single in the ninth to provide a key insurance run. Thomson allowed four runs on five hits in 4 2-3 innings.

Rutgers-Newark scratched out a single run against sophomore Joe Gonzalez in the eighth. Junior Jacob Buurman allowed a two-out run in the ninth but picked up his first save.

FAST START
Doyle is just the second hurler in Division III to reach three victories.
