Rogers Powers Women's Lacrosse Over Springfield 14-11 for Fifth Straight Win

Rogers nets team-leading six goals as Ducks win fifth straight

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 10, 2023) – Fifth-year Camryn Rogers scored a season-high six goals as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team defeated Springfield College 14-11 Friday night in a non-conference matchup at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Stevens never trailed in getting off to a 5-0 start for the second straight season.

Samantha Andresen finished with three goals and an assist while Jade O'Connor scored twice and handed out three assists for the Pride, who fell to 1-3. The contest was the just the second between the teams, with the Ducks moving to 2-0 all-time against the Pride.

Sophomore Alison Lax scored two goals and tallied two assists for the Ducks. Sophomore Emily Smart and senior Julieann Murphy each had a goal and two assists as 10 different Ducks recorded at least one point. Senior Maddie Schmidt scored twice and joined Rogers and Lax as multi-goal players. Fifth-year Morgan Westerby added a goal and an assist, while junior Emily Leiby scored once. Three Ducks registered one assist.

Graduate student Lauren Cunniff drew the start in the cage and made nine saves. She earned her 27th career win and moved to 5-0 on the season. Emily McDermott made six saves in defeat for Springfield. 

The Ducks were able to start the game off on the right foot as they struck first against Springfield. Schmidt scored her fourth goal of the season off of a free-position shot to open the scoring. Rogers doubled the Ducks lead with 9:39 remaining in the quarter off an assist from Murphy. The Pride wasted no time answering Stevens' second goal as they scored less than a minute later to cut the deficit. Later on in the quarter, Stevens was able to re-establish their two-goal lead after Leiby found the net on an assist from Lax. Springfield scored the final goal of the quarter with 30 seconds left as the score stood at 3-2 in favor of the Ducks.

After Westerby gave the Ducks a 4-2 lead with 13:13 remaining in the second quarter, Springfield answered with two straight goals from Jade O'Connor to tie the game at four. After a five-minute scoreless stretch, Stevens was able to retake the lead on a transition goal from Lax, with first-year Maggie Zarish-Yasunas recording her first collegiate assist. After Rogers scored her second of the game less than a minute later, the Pride answered 16 seconds later. Rogers completed her hat trick and paired with Smart to score the final two goals of the quarter to take an 8-5 lead into the break.

Despite trailing at the break, Springfield hopped on the scoreboard 28 seconds into the third to trim Stevens' lead to two. Murphy, the reigning MAC Freedom Offensive Player of the Week, was the next goal scorer in the game as she struck with 9:02 left in the third to put the Ducks back up three. With under five minutes left in the frame, Rogers jumped on the scoreboard for the fourth time, scoring on a pass from Lax. Springfield scored the final goal of the quarter to put the score at 10-7 in favor of the Ducks.

The fourth quarter provided eight goals with each team scoring four times. After Maddie Roy converted for Springfield early in the frame, Rogers responded with her fifth of the game on an assist from fifth-year Josie Cook. The Pride would strike back shorthanded five minutes later to cut the deficit back to two. Still on the player advantage, Stevens pushed their advantage to 12-9 as Rogers scored a nifty play with Smart providing the assist. The Ducks took their biggest lead of the game with 2:58 remaining as Schmidt found the back of the net on a pass from senior Zoe Cook. Lax got on the board again with 1:10 to go to provide the final margin of victory.

The Ducks scored on three of their six free-position shots. Schmidt converted from the eight-meter line in the first quarter and Rogers was able to convert her attempt in the second. Murphy converted in the third. Springfield scored on its only free-position shot.

Stevens finished with a 19-10 advantage on draw controls. Rogers paced the team with seven and first-year Stefanie Sellitto had six. Westerby added three and Leiby added two. Allie Delmonte had three to lead the Pride.

Stevens caused seven of Springfield's 15 turnovers. Zarish-Yasunas led the team with three, which was a career high. The Pride caused seven of the 19 Duck turnovers, with O'Connor leading the way with two.

The Ducks went 17 for 21 on clears, while the Pride went 17 for 19.

Up Next: Women's Lacrosse has a quick turnaround as they head up north to take on No. 15 St. Lawrence University on Mar. 12 in Canton, N.Y. The game is slated for 1 p.m. This will be the first-ever matchup between the two teams. Links for live stats and video are posted to StevensDucks.com.
